World Lion Day
Why are Lions My favorite Animal?
World Lion Day occurs yearly on August 10th. I’ve chosen to highlight this occasion for two reasons.
First, lions became my favorite animal at four years old after watching The Lion King. I enjoyed seeing a young cub named Simba become a king defending his late Father’s throne.
I loved Simba so much that I was taken to see the Broadway play in New York when I was five. Memories of the play are bleak, but I slept with my stuffed animal, Simba, nightly for two years.
Additionally, by highlighting this day, I hope to expose the dangers lions face.
I will accomplish this task by explaining why World Lion Day exists. Then I will provide fun facts about lions and what they represent from a secular and biblical perspective.
Hear Them Roar!
Why Does World Lion Day Exist?
Founded by Derek and Beverly Joubert in 2013, World Lion Day strives to raise awareness that the lion population is declining. Researchers say lions were once found throughout Africa and parts of Asia, and Europe.
Unfortunately, their population has decreased nearly 50% since the late 1990s. Now, 80% of lions dwell in sub-Saharan Africa, and the three largest populations live in Tanzania.
Despite the decline, experts are cautious to label lions as endangered. While this is good news, it does not explain their vast population decrease.
There are four threats responsible for the decrease in the lion population. These threats are
- Illegal wildlife trade.
- Human vs wildlife conflict.
- Habitat destruction.
- Climate change.
I understand how climate change can be a threat since humanity cannot control the rising temperatures and natural disasters that come with warmer weather. These changes impact the lion’s ability to access water, hunt prey, follow regular migration patterns, and increase their chances of deadly human interaction.
However, deadly human interaction, illegal wildlife trade, and habitat destruction are humanity’s fault. How can humanity expect lions to maintain large populations if we keep capturing and killing them for gain?
Humanity’s conduct toward lions must break God’s heart. After all, Genesis 2:15 shows God expects humanity to exercise dominion over everything He created.
Fun Facts About Lions
As one of God’s valuable creations, lions have many interesting aspects that make them unique. Did you know lions are referred to as the king of the jungle? This moniker honors lions for their dominance and strength.
Another reason lions are called the king of the jungle is their roar. Did you know a lion’s roar can last up to forty seconds and be heard five miles away?
A lion’s mighty roar is not its only impressive feature. They are also well-rested animals who sleep twenty hours a day.
Consequently, they only spend early mornings and evenings hunting their prey. Scholars believe this is a hunting strategy because lions can see well in the dark, making it easier for them to hunt their prey.
Along with excellent night vision, certain lions use their climbing ability to catch prey. Ugandan lions climb trees to gain a vantage point for hunting prey and escaping the heat. Interestingly, most of the hunting is done by females.
While providing for the family is a traditional role for men among humans, lions take a different approach. Typically, males remain with their pride (lion family group) to protect them from predators.
Males leave the pride they were reared in to become leaders of other prides. Christian men can relate to the male lion’s philosophy as Genesis 2:18-24 encourages us to find wives and start families.
A lion’s pride helps them become social and understand the importance of teamwork.

What Do Lions Represent?
A Secular Perspective
Principles like teamwork, strength, and dominance are reasons sports leagues name teams or model their mascots after lions. Sports organizations that do this include the
- Chelsea FC
- Detroit Lions.
- Penn State University.
- Premier League.
- Sacramento Kings.
Many humans see these kings of the jungle as royalty. Those who recognize lions as spirit animals believe their royalty and gentleness help people accomplish tasks gently.
They also believe the lion spirit helps people unlock their creativity boldly. Additionally, this animal encourages people to live with assertive self-confidence, allowing them to impose their will.
Conversely, when lions appear in dreams, they force people to confront hidden fears. Symbolism experts believe seeing them in dreams can mean
- You need to confront a conflict.
- You’re escaping personal or someone else’s aggression.
- You possess a tame sense of strength.
- You’re about to experience great joy.
Interestingly, joy is not the only positive quality symbolic of lions. Symbolism experts suggest that those with a lion spirit are loyal, compassionate individuals who love their families.
World Lion Day from a Biblical View
The Bible encourages readers to be loyal, compassionate, and to love their families. However, thinking about World Lion Day and this animal’s meaning from a biblical perspective, scripture offers a different take.
Scripture uses lions as a symbol for God’s divine power and authority. Hosea 11:10-11 mentions how the Israelites will return to the Lord with a trembling reverence.
Additionally, the Son of God is described as the Lion of Judah. The Lion of Judah represents the Kingdom of God, which will reign over the world eternally.
Along with divine authority, these beasts also represent destruction. 1 Peter 5:8 depicts Satan as a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour.
Daniel also proves this when he was thrown into the lion’s den for refusing to stop praying to the Lord. However, God uses Daniel’s defiance and triumph to show King Darius he has authority over the most revered beast.
Another connection between lions and prayer comes from Psalm 34. Psalm 34:10 declares, “the young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.”
This means when we seek the Lord in prayer, God will supply our needs. Scholars warn that this does not mean we’ll get everything we want. Instead, God will meet our needs according to His will for our lives.
Psalm 104:21-22 shows cubs depend on God for their food. These verses also validate lions as nocturnal beasts who dwell in their dens during daylight.
Celebrating World Lion Day
The scriptures mention lions, which proves they are important to God. Knowing this, let’s celebrate World Lion Day by interceding for these beasts.
Pray for improvements concerning.
- Climate change.
- Humanity’s attitude toward lions and their habitats.
- Healthy mating practices help increase their population size.
- Wisdom for scientists and other researchers who work to preserve the lion’s existence.
While prayer is crucial to preserve lions, James 2:17 teaches that faith without good works is dead. This means we must do good works that complement the faith we proclaim.
For World Lion Day, we can exercise our faith by
- Donating to organizations striving to end animal cruelty.
- Petitioning against the South African commercial-breeding practices.
- Protest using lions for traditional medicine and entertainment experiences.
- Refuse to use products made with lion fur.
This approach may preserve the lions and restore respect for God’s creation.
