Though Ruth and Boaz have great chemistry, she\u2019s afraid to let love take its course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">However, she\u2019s not bound by stage fright, as evidenced by her going viral online after singing at a local bar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But just as Ruth starts to embrace Pegram, Syrus comes to collect the debt she owes for breaking their contract. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He and his bodyguard, Wolf, burned down Boaz\u2019s wine cellar to send a warning to Ruth to return to Atlanta.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, after a nearly deadly altercation with Boaz and a heroic act by Naomi, they are sent to jail. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free from the oppression of her past, Ruth marries Boaz. Knowing about her abandonment issues and growing up in foster care helps explain why she needs to meet everyone\u2019s expectations. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But like <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lecrae\/status\/1593684700014460935?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lecrae says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cif you live for people\u2019s acceptance, you\u2019ll die from their rejection.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appearances by artists like Lecrae, Babyface, and Jermaine Dupree also enhance the cultural relevance in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ruth and Boaz<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Pegram means wanderer, and they were lost searching for their identities after losing loved ones and a sense of purpose.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>What I Dislike About the Movie<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes I\u2019d Make to Ruth and Boaz\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">While I appreciate the movie\u2019s ability to highlight suffering, love, and cultural relevance, I\u2019d make three changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, I\u2019d change Ruth\u2019s religious beliefs. Instead of making her a Christian, I\u2019d present her as an African Spiritualist. African Spiritualists worship multiple gods, like the Moabites of the Ancient Near East.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing Ruth\u2019s religious affiliation would align with the Book of Ruth, which describes Ruth as a <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ruth%201%3A4&version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Moabite<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Another change I\u2019d make is the attitude of the grape harvesters. The harvesters are friendly toward one another, which reflects the hospitable demeanor of the South. Southern hospitality is a great characteristic to display towards one\u2019s colleagues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, scholars would suggest that a hospitable work environment isn\u2019t the experience Ruth enjoys in scripture. Instead, she was susceptible to <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theologyofwork.org\/old-testament\/ruth-and-work\/receiving-gods-blessing-of-productivity-means-respecting-co-workers-ruth-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">various types of harassment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, Boaz intentionally places her in the field with <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ruth%202%3A9&version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure she isn\u2019t harmed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Along with highlighting how Boaz prevents Ruth from being harmed, I\u2019d also alter the reason why Naomi and Eli leave Pegram. Therefore, I\u2019d include a government shutdown, recession, or a factory plant to relate to the biblical story more closely.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>The Viewers Responsibility<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Watching Ruth and Boaz<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ruth and Boaz <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omit key details that prevent the movie from being more closely related to the biblical story. Therefore, the audience should read the Book of Ruth after watching the film.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">While the Book of Ruth may not be culturally relevant, the story contains vital information that believers shouldn\u2019t take for granted. For instance, Ruth\u2019s story takes place during a time in Israel\u2019s history when God\u2019s chosen people continually sin against their creator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Judges%2021%3A25&version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judges 21:25<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reveals this when mentioning how everyone does what seems right to themselves.
