So, when Blair, the communications specialist<\/a>\u00a0of the Maxwell Institute, publicly harassed and insulted my friend over a silly joke Dan made in his\u00a0blog, my sense of loyalty to my friend Dan created an impulse in me to call Blair out. \u00a0In my opinion Blair behaved like a jerk. \u00a0Period. \u00a0And I\u2019ve seen no one defend his behavior.<\/p>\n

In response Blair could have simply said, \u201cYes, I was agitated, and overreacted. \u00a0I apologize.\u201d \u00a0Case closed. \u00a0Instead,\u00a0Blair denied the veracity of my report of the event, and threatened to sue me for libel. \u00a0(Really?!) \u00a0As it turns out, Brad Kramer, Blair\u2019s friend and publicist for Kofford Books<\/a>, overheard part<\/em> of the \u201cconversation\u201d and has confirmed the basic accuracy of my account, while admitting that he did not overhear all of the \u201cconversation\u201d\u00a0and thus cannot dispute the rest of my account. \u00a0Note that I repeatedly asked Blair to clarify what precisely was inaccurate in my account, offering to correct any errors. \u00a0He refused.<\/p>\n

In other words, the story I described is fundamentally accurate, though disputed in minor details. \u00a0Blair\u2019s denial was thus a classic example of a Nixonian non-denial denial. \u00a0(If someone accuses you of shooting your wife with a 45-caliber revolver, you can truthfully deny the accuracy of the statement it if you in fact shot your wife with a 38-caliber revolver. \u00a0But quibbling over the caliber of the pistol does not change the fact that you shot your wife.)<\/p>\n

And thus ends the \u201cAffair at FAIR.\u201d \u00a0I\u2019ll allow one or two more comments, and then I\u2019ll put this one to a well deserved oblivion.<\/p>\n
