The Book of Mormon thus predicts that the 360s and 370s were an era in Mesoamerica of major war, political disruption, and dynastic change. \u00a0How does that fit the archaeological context of Mesoamerica in the late fourth century?<\/p>\n

One of the most famous events of the early Classic period\u2013roughly AD 200-400, that is, coterminous with the end of the Book of Mormon\u2013is the \u201cEntrada\u201d (\u201centrance\u201d or \u201cinvasion\u201d) of AD 378 by the warlord Siyaj K\u2019ahk\u2019<\/a>. \u00a0As with most of Mesoamerican history and inscriptions, there is debate about many details of this even, including the pronunciation of Siyaj K\u2019ahk\u2019; his name is also given as\u00a0Siyaj K\u2019ak\u2019,\u00a0Smoking Frog, and K\u2019ak\u2019 Sih or K\u2019aloomte\u2019 (warlord). \u00a0Based on iconographic representations of Siyaj K\u2019ahk\u2019, it is generally assumed that\u00a0he\u00a0came from Teotihuacan, invaded the Maya lands, overthrew a number of cities and dynasties, and installed\u00a0puppet vassal rulers in their stead. \u00a0He is mentioned \u00a0most famously in inscriptions in Tikal stele 31<\/a> (event dated to AD 378), but also in\u00a0Uaxactun (inscriptions dated AD 378 and 396), Bejucal (around 381), and probably R\u00edo Azul (AD 393). \u00a0In other words, this was a major international invasion and war, with many cities submitting to his rule. \u00a0There can be little doubt that many other cities were conquered by Siyaj K\u2019ahk\u2019 which have left no inscriptions, or whose inscriptions have not been found. \u00a0Note that this was not the usual city-state feuding of the ancient Maya.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Maya historical record thus broadly confirms the Book of Mormon claim of major wars and dynastic and cultural transformation in the 370s.<\/p>\n
