Montgomery was a British editor, hymnwriter and poet.  He was particularly associated with humanitarian causes such as the  campaigns to abolish slavery and to end the exploitation of child  chimney sweeps.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote an amazing hymn of praise to Jesus the Lord\u2019s Anointed (Messiah). It\u2019s rich with Davidic eschatological themes.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Hail to the Lord\u2019s Anointed,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> great David\u2019s greater Son!<\/strong><br>\n<strong> Hail in the time appointed,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> his reign on earth begun!<\/strong><br>\n<strong> He comes to break oppression,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> to set the captive free;<\/strong><br>\n<strong> to take away transgression,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> and rule in equity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He comes with succor speedy<\/strong><br>\n<strong> to those who suffer wrong;<\/strong><br>\n<strong> to help the poor and needy,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> and bid the weak be strong;<\/strong><br>\n<strong> to give them songs for sighing,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> their darkness turn to light,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> whose souls, condemned and dying,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> are precious in his sight.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He shall come down like showers<\/strong><br>\n<strong> upon the fruitful earth;<\/strong><br>\n<strong> love, joy, and hope, like flowers,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> spring in his path to birth.<\/strong><br>\n<strong> Before him on the mountains,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> shall peace, the herald, go,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> and righteousness, in fountains,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> from hill to valley flow.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>To him shall prayer unceasing<\/strong><br>\n<strong> and daily vows ascend;<\/strong><br>\n<strong> his kingdom still increasing,<\/strong><br>\n<strong> a kingdom without end.<\/strong><br>\n<strong> The tide of time shall never<\/strong><br>\n<strong> his covenant remove;<\/strong><br>\n<strong> his name shall stand forever;<\/strong><br>\n<strong> that name to us is love.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Update<\/em>:<br>\nHere\u2019s a version of the song by Welcome Wagon<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Welcome Wagon -- Hail to the Lord&#039;s Annointed\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lUbXRMaocQI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I came across a hymn by James Montgomery (4 November 1771 \u2013 30 April 1854).
