$\"\"$ I was saddened to hear the news of the death of the brilliant British NT scholars C.K. Barrett, who wrote some superb NT commentaries and books on early Christianity. Jimmy Dunn writes:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will be saddened to hear that Kingsley Barrett, my predecessor, died last night (6.30 pm, 26.08.11) \u2013 aged 94. He was the greatest UK commentator on NT texts since J. B. Lightfoot, and much loved by a wide range of Methodist chapels to which he ministered for about 60 years. He will be much missed, but his commentaries will live on for many years, providing information and insight to future generations of students of the NT.\u201d<\/p>\n

It has to be Barrett\u2019s Gospel of John commentary which is his best work. I love this quote from that book:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe deeds and\u00a0words of\u00a0Jesus are the deeds and\u00a0words of\u00a0God; if this be not true the\u00a0book is\u00a0blasphemous\u201d (Gospel according to St. John<\/em>, pp. 155-56).<\/p>\n
