I would frame this in terms of supporting caregiving\u2013framing things in terms of \u201cequality\u201d just encourages people to judge the depth of others\u2019 relationships in the abstract (are<\/em> boyfriends and husbands really equal?), instead of asking whether caregiving and sacrificial love are really taking place. Still, this makes an important point:<\/p>\n

Both government and the private sector can do more. Only three states\u00a0have paid family leave laws, and only California\u2019s law\u00a0covers care for\u00a0siblings, grandparents, grandchildren and parents-in-law<\/a>.\u00a0I consider my gay stepbrother and his partner as \u201cframily \u2014 friends and family.\u201d Along with my partner, three of the four of us manage our chronic health conditions extremely well. The law should see this for what it is: affection, solidarity, and love.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
