Twenty minutes into \u201cCrimson Peak\u201d I was thinking, \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll just turn my brain off and look at the pretty dresses, this\u2019ll be fun if I let it.\u201d That was right before it turned from a kind of dumb, semi-political ghost tale into a terrifically compelling horror-romance swoonfest. Once the movie makes its swerve into full Gothic it is phenomenal, the kind of thing you\u2019ll rewatch if you like your comfort food red and dripping.<\/p>\n
Director Guillermo del Toro (\u201cPan\u2019s Labyrinth\u201d, \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Backbone<\/a>\u201c) wears his influences on his giant mutton-chop sleeve. \u201cThe Changeling\u201d, \u201cLa Chute de la Maison d\u2019Usher\u201d, \u201cThe Shining\u201d, \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d and \u201cBluebeard,\u201d \u201cRebecca\u201d, \u201cFlowers in the Attic\u201d (!)\u2013if you like this stuff, get your fangs right on into this movie.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
