Last week I saw The Lobster<\/em>, an extremely sad and violent romantic comedy about a world in which, if you don\u2019t find a romantic partner within 45 days, you\u2019ll be turned into an animal. It\u2019s sort of \u201cWhy Our Culture Desperately Needs Spiritual Friendship: The Movie.\u201d I hesitate to recommend it to you guys, because it was really hard to watch, partly because it\u2019s so bleak and partly because it\u2019s bleak specifically about loneliness and feeling like there\u2019s no place in the world for someone who hasn\u2019t found a spouse. But it\u2019s a revealing movie\u2013a funhouse mirror held up to our culture as it really is. I reviewed it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But here I\u2019d like to talk about what isn\u2019t in the movie even a little bit, because\u2013and maybe this is spoilerous\u2013what\u2019s totally absent are the three theological virtues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
