The current show at the Smithsonian\u2019s Anacostia Community Museum, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/anacostia.si.edu\/Exhibitions\/Details\/Twelve-Years-that-Shook-and-Shaped-Washington-1963-1975-5986\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Twelve Years that Shook and Shaped Washington: 1963 \u2013 1975<\/a>,\u201d is an attempt to bridge the gap\u2013or at least to give official Washington\u2019s view of unofficial DC.<\/p>\n<p>The show is one of those \u201csocial history\u201d grab-bags: a display about public colleges here, a selection of dashikis there. We get morsels of a lot of things but few full dishes. Why isn\u2019t there any video in the section on black dance and theater? Why not let us <em>hear<\/em> some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=chuck+brown+and+the+soul+searchers\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">go-go<\/a>, the native form of funk born toward the tail end of the show\u2019s timeline? Why are all the photos printed onto deeply-colored backgrounds, making them blurry and inartistic?<\/p>\n<p>But as you move through the meandering exhibit, a few arguments do emerge.<\/p>\n<p>The timeline is itself an argument.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/urbs\/city-of-good-intentions-washington-dc-anacostia-riots-1968\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">more<\/a> (note to visitors: If you go on the weekday by metro you have to hike up a big old hill. If you go on the weekend there\u2019s a free shuttle. I stopped at a rec center right before I reached the museum to ask directions\u2013it\u2019s also not super easy to find the first time\u2013and I was bright red and sweating.
