UPLIFTING<\/strong>: Over the weekend I watched Up <\/em>in 3D. It was fantastic! (Very mild spoilers follow.)<\/p>\n Really, one of the best children\u2019s movies I\u2019ve ever seen\u2013maybe even second-best after the indescribable Last Unicorn<\/em>. I\u2019d say it\u2019s tied with The Great Muppet Caper<\/em>. It\u2019s a beautiful story of love and grief, of fulfilling one\u2019s dreams and sacrificing them, of hope and wanderlust and discovery and homecoming. I think maybe the Kevin-the-bird arc is the subplot which defines the movie\u2019s heart: Obligations mean that sometimes a beautiful creature wanders into your world, and you fall in love with her, and then you let her go home.<\/p>\n It\u2019s poignant, hilarious, full of the \u201csense of wonder\u201d and yet simultaneously very aware of life\u2019s limits. I loved Ratatouille<\/em>, the only other Pixar flick I\u2019ve seen, but this was just in a different ballpark.<\/p>\n I will say that I don\u2019t think of myself as someone with a fear of heights, but there are a lot <\/em>of scenes in which a small child almost plummets to his death, and\u2026 I had a hard time. A lot of careful breathing and \u201cit\u2019s just a movie!\u201d, there. <\/p>\n And, as I said to friends who\u2019d watched the movie with me, \u201cMaybe not today\u2013maybe not tomorrow\u2013but SOMEDAY, we\u2019ll get a children\u2019s movie or a superhero movie without Daddy Issues.\u201d I thought the choices around the divorce subplot were somewhat clumsy at the very end, even though they were pretty undeniably emotionally effective.<\/p>\n Nonetheless, highly recommended.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" UPLIFTING: Over the weekend I watched Up in 3D.
