Translators, therefore, must either translate both words as \u201clove,\u201d which loses a potential nuance in the original, or else must try to somehow make the difference apparent in English. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How are we to understand the shift between the two verbs in this passage?<\/p>\n<p>I will argue that when Peter says, \u201cI love [<i>phil\u00e9o<\/i>] You,\u201d he is declaring a more intimate form of love than if he responded \u201cI love [<i>agap\u00e1o<\/i>] You.\u201d I will also argue that by switching from <i>agap\u00e1o<\/i> to <i>phil\u00e9o<\/i>, Jesus is helping to confirm Peter\u2019s restoration to friendship with Christ.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spiritualfriendship.org\/2019\/05\/05\/agapao-and-phileo-by-the-sea-of-tiberias\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">more<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Fish on grill picture via Wikimedia Commons<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>this is great stuff: After breakfast, Peter and Jesus had a conversation which raises an interesting question about how to understand the verbs for love\u2014agap\u00e1o and phil\u00e9o\u2014used in the original Greek.
