After breakfast, Peter and Jesus had a conversation which raises an interesting question about how to understand the verbs for love\u2014agap\u00e1o<\/i> and phil\u00e9o<\/i>\u2014used in the original Greek.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Agap\u00e1o<\/i> (Strong\u2019s<\/i> #25<\/a>) is a verb that means \u201cto love\u201d related to the noun ag\u00e1pe<\/i> (love). Phil\u00e9o<\/i> (Strong\u2019s<\/i> #5368<\/a>) is also a verb usually translated \u201cto love,\u201d related to the nouns ph\u00edlos<\/i>, (friend) and phil\u00eda <\/i>(friendship).<\/p>\n

The passage is difficult to translate because although English has always had separate nouns for \u201clove\u201d and \u201cfriendship,\u201d no English speaker prior to Mark Zuckerberg used \u201cfriend\u201d as a verb. Translators, therefore, must either translate both words as \u201clove,\u201d which loses a potential nuance in the original, or else must try to somehow make the difference apparent in English. \u2026<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

How are we to understand the shift between the two verbs in this passage?<\/p>\n

I will argue that when Peter says, \u201cI love [phil\u00e9o<\/i>] You,\u201d he is declaring a more intimate form of love than if he responded \u201cI love [agap\u00e1o<\/i>] You.\u201d I will also argue that by switching from agap\u00e1o<\/i> to phil\u00e9o<\/i>, Jesus is helping to confirm Peter\u2019s restoration to friendship with Christ.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
