A judge is recalled by voters after handing down what\u2019s perceived as a shockingly light sentence to a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brock_turner\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">college athlete convicted of sexual assault<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These are two stories from America\u2019s \u201cpunishment factory,\u201d the term Trump-appointed federal judge Stephanos Bibas coined in his 2012 work of legal philosophy for laymen, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/30RAEsE\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i>The Machinery of Criminal Justice<\/i><\/a>. Bibas\u2019s central thesis is framed in terms familiar to Trump-era politics: \u201cinsiders,\u201d meaning legal professionals, have captured the justice system, shutting out \u201coutsiders\u201d from victims to defendants to Joe Q. Public. Insiders use all the tools at their disposal (trading guilty pleas for reduced charges, as in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/news\/20190509\/masonique-saunders-admits-to-robbery-that-led-to-boyfriends-death\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Saunders case<\/a>, is only the most flamboyant) to clear staggering caseloads; under pressure to hit production quotas, they sacrifice the goal of anything like justice.
