\u201cEveryone is female, and everyone hates it.\u201d This is the thesis of Andrea Long Chu\u2019s performatively edgy, frequently hilarious chapbook, Females<\/em>, which is both a work of queer theory and a satire on its excesses. It\u2019s feminist theory fueled by contradictions within feminism\u2014and it\u2019s also, unintentionally, an indictment of contemporary Christianity.<\/p>\n

To be \u201cfemale,\u201d here, is to be subjected, \u201cto be defined by self-negation,\u201d to scoop out your own desires and replace them with somebody else\u2019s, desiring only to be what he<\/em> desires. \u201cI am female,\u201d Chu writes, \u201cAnd you, dear reader, are female, even\u2014especially\u2014if you are not a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s female to be catcalled. It\u2019s female to dress seductively. But it\u2019s at least as female to hand over your customer\u2019s order with a smile and the corporate-mandated phrase, \u201cMy pleasure.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
