I\u2019m in the University Bookman, with an essay I posted here but revised & improved for the magazine:<\/p>\n

Four of these novels are classics of revolt against the times: Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa\u2019s The Leopard<\/a><\/em>, Joseph Roth\u2019s The Radetzky March<\/a><\/em>, Mikhail Bulgakov\u2019s Russian Civil War novel White Guard<\/a><\/em>, and Evelyn Waugh\u2019s Sword of Honour<\/a><\/em> trilogy. The fifth, Hermann Hesse\u2019s The Glass Bead Game<\/a><\/em>, is an experimental science-fiction collage novel which at first seems to sit oddly among works otherwise set in some version of a real, historical world. Yet to read these books not in order of publication but in the order I\u2019ve just named them\u2014slotting Hesse in right before Waugh\u2014is to watch the apocalypse in slow motion. The post-apocalyptic world is recognizably our own, as the vanished world is recognizably alien. By exploring these novels\u2019 common ground, we can see what we\u2019ve lost\u2014and what we\u2019ve forgotten.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
