A lot of people think the obvious American wannabe-ness, the green beer and all that, somehow make St Patrick\u2019s Day less awesome. I don\u2019t; why <em>shouldn\u2019t<\/em> there be a holiday that\u2019s really about America and immigration, even if it pretends to be about Ireland?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amy Welborn<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/openbook\/2007\/03\/the_prodigal_so.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Pope speaks with kids in a juvenile detention center.<\/a> And why <a href=\"http:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/openbook\/2007\/03\/shylock_in_fort.html#more\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Merchant of Venice<\/em> is just unplayable now<\/a>. (The Pacino version was about as good as I think you can get, really, and it was painful.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Horror Roundtable<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehorrorblog.com\/2007\/03\/17\/horror-roundtable-week-thirty-eight\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The best horror-movie soundtracks<\/a>. My votes go to, probably in this order, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/eve-tushnet.blogspot.com\/2005_08_01_eve-tushnet_archive.html#112347353559997485\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Suspiria<\/a><\/em>; <em><a href=\"http:\/\/eve-tushnet.blogspot.com\/2007_02_01_archive.html#46898081947773846#46898081947773846\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Can of Worms Wide Shut<\/a><\/em>; and <em>La Chute de la Maison d\u2019Usher<\/em>. Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alltooflat.com\/about\/personal\/sean\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sean Collins<\/a>. (I\u2019m not sure I\u2019d count <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yale.edu\/yfp\/archives\/99_9_vertigo.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Vertigo<\/a><\/em> as a horror movie\u2013although I\u2019m not sure I wouldn\u2019t\u2013which is why it doesn\u2019t appear here.)<\/p>\n<p>And I haven\u2019t yet read this <em><strong>First Things<\/strong><\/em> piece about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/article.php3?id_article=5416\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Stephen King<\/a>. But <em>Pet Sematary<\/em> and <em>The Shining<\/em> are among the most powerful novels I\u2019ve ever read. <em>The Dead Zone<\/em>,<em> Cujo<\/em>, <em>Christine<\/em>, and even <em>Misery<\/em> have some pretty amazing moments. (Don\u2019t talk to me about <em>IT<\/em>.)
