This should be more than simple references to God and religion. \u2026I\u2019m interested in seeing the allusions and references as indications of the impact of religion on popular culture, so for this purpose it doesn\u2019t really matter whether the references are entirely flattering or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are <a href=\"http:\/\/camassia.notfrisco2.com\/archives\/004231.html#004231\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Camassia\u2019s contributions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And here are mine:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ani DiFranco, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.danah.org\/Ani\/Dilate\/AdamAndEve.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Adam and Eve.<\/a>\u201c<\/strong> \u201cYou think you\u2019re Adam\/And you think I\u2019m Eve.\u201d There\u2019s a self-righteous chorus that I hate (\u201cI envy you your ignorance\/I hear that it\u2019s bliss\u201d), but except for that, this song is perfect, and DiFranco\u2019s ripping-at-the-seams low wail is stunning. My favorite bit: \u201cJust don\u2019t treat me like I am\/something that happened to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Avengers, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/members.aol.com\/aytab2\/corpus.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Corpus Christi<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong> Title refers to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04390b.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ<\/a>. Whole song is about how Catholicism sucks. Catchy tune though! (Well, to be fair, the song seems to me like it\u2019s sung from the perspective of someone who was once genuinely seeking Christ\u2013that\u2019s the verses\u2013but has now given up\u2013that\u2019s the chorus.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alwaysontherun.net\/catpower.htm#m5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Cat Power, \u201cYou May Know Him.\u201d<\/strong><\/a> \u201cOh, Lord, surprised by the rise in sin, you came through\/Over and over and over and over again.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.azlyrics.com\/lyrics\/fugees\/thebeast.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Fugees, \u201cThe Beast.\u201d <\/a><\/strong>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hti.umich.edu\/cgi\/k\/kjv\/kjv-idx?type=DIV2&amp;byte=4389903\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">On the mountain Satan offered me Manhattan<\/a>\/Help me Jah, Jah.\u201d This was one of maybe five lines that made me say, <em>I must have this album<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Huggy Bear, \u201cPrayer.\u201d<\/strong> \u201cI am walking through the valley of the shadow of death. I\u2019m feeling fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smoe.org\/ecto\/lyrics\/misc\/mercy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Peter Gabriel, \u201cMercy Street.\u201d<\/strong><\/a> \u201cConfessing all the secret things in the warm velvet box\/To the priest\u2013he\u2019s the doctor\u2013he can handle the shocks.\u201d A beautiful song.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.purelyrics.com\/index.php?lyrics=fyhvtnfc\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>P.J. Harvey, \u201cSnake.\u201d<\/strong><\/a> Whole song is about the snake and Adam and Eve. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Severed Heads, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawa-anime.org\/~eyevocal\/shlf\/sevsrotu.htm#asd\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">All Saints Day<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawa-anime.org\/~eyevocal\/shlf\/sevsrotu.htm#gr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Greater Reward<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong> The things in quotation marks at the end of the lyrics are statements by the lyricist, Tom Ellard, on what he was on about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siouxsie and the Banshees, \u201cThe Lord\u2019s Prayer.\u201d<\/strong> This is how I remembered the Lord\u2019s Prayer when I first became Catholic and didn\u2019t have it in memory. It\u2019s a pretty lame song, unfortunately. \u201cSacre bleu!
