First, some links from others. Light on Dark Water<\/span> talks about the gallows humor of Tallahassee<\/span>.<\/a><\/p>\n

AM suggests that Goats fans check out Wovenhand<\/span>, and offers this ferocious, Soviet-surrealism video<\/a> as evidence. (He says it \u201cwould fit well with your \u2018so far from God so far from the United States\u2019 tag.\u201d) Well worth your time. I haven\u2019t read this interview<\/a> yet.<\/p>\n

And both CR and HEAR pointed me toward this video of Darnielle covering Ace of Base<\/a>. Awesome. I love watching people love things.<\/p>\n

And now some short notes on albums.<\/p>\n

We Shall All Be Healed<\/span>: This grew on me. (Like a fungus, yes, I know.) At first it\u2019s scraps and postcards and bad broken memories from a really unpleasant time of life, a friend handcuffed to a hospital bed; and then it sort of comes together into the getting-clean album, cotton balls in the top drawer. The persistent punishment of not being trusted. There\u2019s a lot of resignation to consequences (\u201cYou\u2019re gonna do what you want to do, no matter what I ask of you,\u201d which works both ways, from the addict to the cop or from the lover to the addict). Man, this guy really tries hard<\/span> to hope in a hard-up world.<\/p>\n

The Life of the World to Come<\/span>: Another entry in the death-haunted art of friendship, with song titles from Scripture, sometimes comforting and sometimes\u2026 the other things that Scripture is. \u201cAnd if my prayer go unanswered, that\u2019s okay\u201d reminded me of the Weakerthans\u2019 \u201cI want to call requests down heating vents\/and hear them answered with a whispered \u2018no\u2019,\u201d and in general I could just point you to my Weakerthans review piece<\/a> instead of writing about this album.<\/p>\n

The title of the last song pretty much says it all: \u201cEzekiel 7<\/a> and the Permanent Efficacy of Grace.\u201d<\/p>\n

All Eternals Deck<\/span>: \u201cEstate Sale Sign\u201d: Yeah, if you liked Everything Must Go<\/a><\/span> you might check this one out too. Similar metaphor, similar meaning, similarly awesome, with the urgency acknowledged rather than denied as long as possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Autopsy Garland\u201d: \u201cDeco cufflinks and cognac by the glass,\u201d REALLY nice use of hard consonants. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to see these guys without their masks on. Or their gloves.\u201d<\/p>\n

I know the title of this song is the reason I had this thought, but it\u2019s still true: Fans of the MGs should read Kathy Shaidle\u2019s poetry<\/a>.<\/p>\n
