Some of my archives are Bloggered, so this is incomplete; shrug.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/eve-tushnet.blogspot.com\/2003_01_01_eve-tushnet_archive.html#88279566\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tradition vs. the past<\/a>: \u201c\u2026The first and most basic point is that tradition is not about restoring some real or imagined past era. Tradition gives an institution (a nation, a debating society, a university) a persona; it makes the institution more like a person. And this is necessary in order to make the institution a possible object of human loyalties, since all our loyalties are to persons. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve also found that tradition\u2019s roots are often very odd\u2013and that isn\u2019t a point against tradition! Tradition often develops and accumulates in a Hayekish spontaneous-order kind of way, but along the way traditions also result from jokes, accidents, and misreadings\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eve-tushnet.blogspot.com\/2003_01_01_eve-tushnet_archive.html#87559776\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">In defense of free will<\/a>: \u201cFirst, a recent conversation with my friend Gene underlined for me the ways in which the question of freedom of the will is linked to the question of personal identity. Free will requires that there be a \u2018me\u2019 who chooses, rather than simply a pushing and pulling jostle of neural impulses and affects. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026I tend to believe that free will is one of the philosophical questions that is far better handled in poetry and fiction than in philosophy, in part because it is such a bedrock, foundational issue\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>March<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/eve-tushnet.blogspot.com\/2003_03_01_eve-tushnet_archive.html#90503111\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Against torture<\/a>. Why was this controversial? Gore <\/em>should also oppose <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.
