GodSpy interviews Barbara Nicolosi<\/a>: \u201c\u2026When you\u2019ve been thrown out of the convent during the worst vocation crisis in the history of the Church, what else can the world do to you?<\/p>\n\u201c\u2026If we turned over Hollywood to the Christians tomorrow, we\u2019d make worse movies than we\u2019re making now because they would mostly be guilty of what Flannery O\u2019Connor called\u2013for Christian\u2013\u2018inexcusable sentimentality.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2026One of the reasons Barbara Hall became a Catholic, as she expressed it to me, was: \u2018I just got exhausted with unbelief. I just couldn\u2019t keep it up anymore.\u2019 She\u2019s typical of the creative community that has worn itself out since the sexual revolution, throwing itself around, doing anything it wanted, absolute license and power. And they\u2019re exhausted. So, they come to faith with a deep understanding of sin.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2026First, in terms of artistry, I think the Catholics, even the ones who are lapsed, have a natural sense of allegory and metaphor that comes from several thousand years of ingrained liturgy. The liturgy is real, but it\u2019s also rich in symbols. So you have the people who are fallen away\u2013I\u2019m thinking of a screenwriter right now who\u2019s an angry, angry ex-Catholic. He\u2019s done so much harm. But he has an instinctive sense of symbolism that gives his writing visual power. I\u2019ve said to him several times, \u2018the reason you\u2019re really good is because you were Catholic\u2019 <\/strong>and when we\u2019re alone he\u2019ll acknowledge it. I think the liturgical tradition is key to that.<\/p>\n\u201c\u2026I think that, unfortunately, a lot of orthodox Catholics and Christians are either sitting in the cave hunkered down, or they\u2019re like Jonah sitting under a Gourd plant waiting for God to vent his wrath on the world\u2013on the ungodly\u2013and they\u2019re going to be disappointed if He doesn\u2019t. I don\u2019t see these people having sorrow for sin; I see them having indignation towards sin. And to me, that\u2019s an important difference. Sorrow for sin is \u2018I am a part of this.\u2019 Indignation for sin is \u2018you are the ones messing up the world.'\u201d <\/p>\n
