{"id":3614,"date":"2003-12-03T04:04:00","date_gmt":"2003-12-03T04:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/evetushnet\/2003\/12\/3614\/"},"modified":"2003-12-03T04:04:00","modified_gmt":"2003-12-03T04:04:00","slug":"3614","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/evetushnet\/2003\/12\/3614.html","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><strong>REAL LIFE IS SO UNREALISTIC, DON\u2019T YOU THINK?<\/strong>: I was reading my old post about \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/eve-tushnet.blogspot.com\/2002_03_31_eve-tushnet_archive.html#11384100\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Bride of Frankenstein<\/a>,\u201d and came across my appreciative citation of this line from an otherwise unsatisfying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brightlightsfilm.com\/19\/19_bride1.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">piece <\/a>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brightlightsfilm.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bright Lights Film Journal<\/a>: \u201c\u2026a genre effort like \u2018Bride,\u2019 full of fantasy and monster-outsiders, was clearly the perfect medium for indulging the most radical aspects of a gay sensibility\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I didn\u2019t elaborate on that, and I don\u2019t know that I understood it especially well. Rereading my post, I wondered why it struck me so much. Here\u2019s why: Anyone who is or feels herself radically opposed to the currents of the day is liable to feel that her own account of her life is \u201cunrealistic.\u201d Her perspective is not realist. Her perspective is fantastic, outside, genre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRealism\u201d only works for people whose worldviews are already accepted as realistic. The rest of us must make do with genre. <\/p>\n<p>I expect that\u2019s why I sense no appreciable difference between my \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/evestoryblog.blogspot.com\/2003_09_01_evestoryblog_archive.html#106245691439544929\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">realist<\/a>\u201d (<em>augh!<\/em> are my archives fixed yet???), <a href=\"http:\/\/evestoryblog.blogspot.com\/2003_11_01_evestoryblog_archive.html#106792080658977852\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">sci-fi<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/evestoryblog.blogspot.com\/2003_12_01_evestoryblog_archive.html#107043022160572391\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"
