LOSING IN FRONT OF YOUR HOME CROWD<\/span>: I have watched neither Friday Night Lights<\/span> nor Glee<\/span>, but I have not been able to get this column comparing the two<\/a> out of my head. FNL<\/span> comes across as both better and more countercultural, which does not surprise me. (I do think it\u2019s bizarre that the author reads \u201ceveryone moves away from Dillon because it\u2019s a dead-end small town\u201d as a rejection of solipsism\u2013I\u2019m pretty sure she means that since the characters we like get switched out for new characters, the audience\u2019s focus remains on the town as a whole, a community, but she makes this process sound a lot less tragic than the \u201cmeager chance of improvement earned at the price of leaving your hometown\u201d storyline really is. Why shouldn\u2019t<\/span> people \u201cloom[] around Dillon forever\u201d\u2013why is staying home presented so negatively, given the author\u2019s other premises? Anyway that\u2019s just a bobble in an otherwise terrific piece.)<\/p>\n
