OUTSIDE OVER THERE<\/b>: OK, just read the six excerpts<\/a> (only excerpts! and only six! lame\u2026) on \u201cWhat we think of America.\u201d Good stuff, well worth your time. Ivan Klima\u2019s piece is probably the most accurate, though it\u2019s a bit self-congratulatory to cite him since he praises Americans\u2019 willingness to help strangers. John Gray\u2019s take on New Orleans and American art-\u2018n\u2019-lit is probably the most insightful\u2013the comparison of American and Russian literature is right on, as I\u2019ve (sort of) said before<\/a>. But his conclusion is off. \u201cAmerica is too rich in contradictions for any definition of it to be possible. For every attitude that is supposed to be distinctively American, one can find an opposite stance that is no less so,\u201d he writes, and sums this up with, \u201cAmerica is unknowable.\u201d But that\u2019s not right. There isn\u2019t just one typical American personality, event, or reaction; there are several, often in fierce combat with one another. But each one is distinctively American. America\u2013like most countries, I should think\u2013can only be understood by examining which <\/i>contradictory positions and attitudes are clashing. <\/p>\n
