It\u2019s often based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/dreher\/shame-obesity\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">personal experience<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/03\/20\/174839322\/teen-pregnancy-ads-shame-campaign\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">home truths from one\u2019s mom<\/a>, and because people do sometimes say that shame worked <em>for them<\/em> I had a hard time articulating why I rejected this rhetoric so completely.<\/p>\n<p>But I recently finished reading <em>Middlemarch<\/em> for the first time. Shame motivates several of the characters, and it shapes their lives in sharply distinct ways: At least one person really does clean up his act in part due to being shamed, whereas another person becomes much worse than he needed to be and yet another reacts to shame by becoming defiant and a bit superior. Looking at these divergent reactions might illuminate what\u2019s going on when shame \u201cworks\u201d\u2014and why it\u2019s <em>not<\/em>, in my view, a valid tool of social control.
