on a terrific new film. And given my readership, I\u2019ll note that Hedwig is one of the most fascinating and nuanced Christian characters I can remember in a recent movie which isn\u2019t<\/em> centrally concerned with faith:<\/p>\n

If We Are the Best!<\/em> were The Breakfast Club<\/em>, Allison would make over Claire\u2014and the boys would just be accessories.<\/p>\n

We Are the Best!<\/em> is Lukas Moodysson\u2019s confection about middle-school punker chicks in early \u201980s Stockholm. Klara (Mira Grosin) is the cute, strident one with the cool\u00a0parents. Bobo (Mira Barkhammar) is the mousy, insecure one who gets to stay over at Klara\u2019s place so her mom can get on-again with her on-again, off-again boyfriend. They roam through their world, tiny splinters of arrogance and neediness, little idiots you\u2019ll quickly come to love.<\/p>\n

I admit that I\u2019m predisposed to love Bobo and Klara. Their punk band\u2019s big song is called \u201cHate the Sport!\u201d and it\u2019s about how terrible gym class is. I\u2019m grinning right now remembering the scenes where they amble around the gym talking to one another when they\u2019re supposed to be running punishment laps; where they give each other terrifying home haircuts spiked with soap; where Bobo gets that teen misery-face, the gut-churning face that says, I messed up and now everything is complicated!<\/em> I remember all this stuff\u2014this is what it\u2019s like.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
