(I think I\u2019d also add a category for horror art which provokes teshuvah\/repentance. Some horror I\u2019ve seen and loved does neither for me\u2013Suspiria<\/em> is amazing, just incredible art, but I don\u2019t think it \u201ctraumatized\u201d me in the way Sean means, nor did it provoke any change in my behavior. But a lot of other movies\u2013Vertigo<\/em>, obviously, but also Ringu <\/em>and Barton Fink<\/em>\u2013seem to me to have the potential to provoke a change in self-understanding which wreaks itself through the emotions, but beyond them, into actions.* Anyway, yeah, I get behind Sean\u2019s cri de coeur!)<\/p>\n

(*If you think you hear a faint echo of my disagreement with Sean about the ending of Eyes Wide Shut<\/em>, you\u2019re right. On the other hand, I think Sean could have easily rebutted my points in that disagreement by saying that the movie itself has the capacity to provoke teshuvah, whether or not Tom Cruise\u2019s character actually ends up there. I think that\u2019s true, and it\u2019s a very strong point against that aspect of my criticism of the movie.)<\/p>\n

Also, this comic<\/a> sounds like it might echo intriguingly against \u201cKeela, The Outcast Indian Maiden,\u201d which is the only Eudora Welty story I really love.<\/p>\n

VJ Morton<\/a><\/strong> has a huge <\/em>raft of reviews from the Toronto International Film Festival.
