Some legislators are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/04\/us\/politics\/holder-and-republicans-unite-to-soften-sentencing-laws.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">pushing<\/a> to eliminate mandatory sentencing minimums for nonviolent drug offenders. Others are calling for the federal prison population to be <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/232325-senators-unveil-prison-reform-bill\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">slashed<\/a> by letting some prisoners out early. Others still are advocating for incarcerated juveniles to be treated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/bb\/rand-paul-cory-booker-team-bipartisan-reform-criminal-justice-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">less harshly<\/a>. Meanwhile, states all over the country are decriminalizing certain misdemeanor offenses so that people who are caught doing illegal but not-actually-very-bad things are punished less severely than they used to be.<\/p>\n<div class=\"text-2 text parbase section\">\n<p>On the surface, decriminalization of petty offenses seems like an approach that will make our criminal justice system less punitive and less expensive.
