From Montaigne to Marsden Hartley, from St. Aelred to Andrew Sullivan, from elegant tribute to anguished lament, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholiclane.com\/the-death-haunted-art-of-friendship-part-i\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">our art of friendship is haunted by the death of friends<\/a>. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Part of what makes my friend Wesley Hill\u2019s slender new book so intriguing is that it is an attempt to give an account of friendship that is grounded in history, theology, and literature\u2014yet forward-looking. <em>Spiritual Friendship: Finding Love in the Church as a Gay Christian<\/em> is an essayistic collection of provocations, not a tome intended to be \u201cthe last word\u201d on friendship or its relationship to Christian community. It\u2019s a book about hope and hope\u2019s uncertainty, about trust and taking chances; it\u2019s not a look back at a friendship well-lived.
