Are you an extrovert or introvert?  Based on the number of online quizzes, knowing that answer seems to be all the rage today. So where do you fall? Me? I’m a pretty strong extrovert. I absolutely love to be with other people! All the laughing, talking, supporting each other during the tough times, celebrating in the good times, and just plain old hanging out with friends is where I thrive.  For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a large social… Read more

Life takes many strange turns. If you would have told me ten years ago that I would be writing a story about my journey from faith to atheism, I would have called the elders of my church and held an all night prayer meeting for your soul! Yet, here I am. A former pastor, well known, well respected, and…an atheist. I didn’t start out thinking that I would lose my faith. In fact, I believed that my faith was so… Read more

When a popular junior girl named Jennifer acted very friendly toward me for no reason whatsoever a month into my new school experience, I accepted her invitation to a “pizza blast” without hesitation. I was blown away. Read more

A certain Orientalist thought process, among some Muslims and Non-Muslims, seems rooted in the assumption that religion – in particular Islam nowadays – represents some kind of resistance to capitalism and colonialism. The narrative that Islam is an alternative to ‘Western’ ideas of capitalism, globalization, and neoliberal economics, is sometimes touted as evidence of Islam’s moral superiority – that Islam teaches you to be more concerned with the hereafter, while the duniya (the world of the living) gets you engrossed… Read more

f there’s a bright spot anywhere in this week’s events, it is that people are good to each other and help where they can–with no deity required at all to explain any of it. No, no god is involved with anything weather-related in our world, nor in the aftermath of any of it. And thank goodness for that. If there were, if I really thought any god was involved, that being would have an awful lot of explaining to do. Read more

My adult self realizes nowadays that to many Christians, Satan is very real–and necessary. Satan’s existence is a lot easier to prove and demonstrate than God’s, and Satan doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty while God clearly is taking a hands-off approach. Like medieval witch-hunters who clearly saw that Satan’s involvement with women indisputably proved the existence of a supernatural world, modern Christians can point to Satan’s clear involvement in their lives as proof that God, too, must exist, for Satan cannot exist without God. Christians are, by absolute necessity, downright obsessed with Satan. Read more

One of the things I’ve heard Christians say over and over is that without their god nobody can possibly be “good.” A non-Christian is, they say, immoral, far more likely to commit a crime, and far less trustworthy. The implication is that Christians, by contrast, are in their opinion less likely to commit crimes and are far more moral and trustworthy. When this is disputed by sharing information about Christians who have committed crimes or who are not in the least moral or trustworthy, though, the sharer is likely to be accused of “bashing Christians” or smearing the faith, or that Christian’s accused of not being a TRUE CHRISTIAN™. It’s easy for me to see, now that I’m years out of the religion, why it’s so important that Christians maintain this fiction. Read more

Right now, there are people out there who really think that people deconvert because they wanted to have sex, or because they’re shallow, or stupid, or angry, or doing Christianity all wrong. But the more of us there are who leave and are open about it, the less able those who remain are to point at us all and say that about us. Read more

In this video, I explained that I studied Literary Criticism at my seminary. Literary experts has proven that the story of Jesus is consistent with the fiction. When you approach the Bible as a literature, not God’s word, you will see how clever the story of Jesus is constructed. It is designed to stir up people emotions and draw them to ‘faith.’ This video is signed in American Sign Language and subtitled in English. Read more
