Let\u2019s take a look.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-how-did-veterans-day-become-reality\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">How Did Veterans Day Become Reality?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Veterans Day began as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_Day?\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Armistice Day<\/a> in 1919, commemorating the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. Here is the timeline for how the holiday evolved:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u00a0November 11, 1918,<\/strong> marked the armistice between the Allied nations and Germany, ending major hostilities in World War I at the <strong>11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>1919<\/strong>, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first <strong>Armistice Day<\/strong>, honoring the heroism of those who served and celebrating peace restored.<\/li>\n<li>The day was typically observed with parades, public gatherings, and, especially, a moment of silence at 11 AM.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1938<\/strong>: Armistice Day became a legal federal holiday, focused on honoring WWI veterans.<\/li>\n<li>After <strong>World War II and the Korean War<\/strong>, Americans recognized the need to honor <strong>all<\/strong> veterans, not just those from WWI.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>1954<\/strong>, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation officially <a href=\"https:\/\/civicsforlife.org\/history-legacy-of-veterans-day\/?\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">renaming<\/a> the holiday <strong>Veterans Day<\/strong>, expanding its scope to include all U.S. military veterans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h-how-is-veterans-day-celebrated-today\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">How Do We Celebrate It Today?<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5870\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5870\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5870 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/1770\/2025\/11\/small-vecteezy_soldier-holding-american-flag_48463795_small-300x166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We celebrate all who served this country today\u2014image courtesy of ecteezy.com.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today, Americans celebrate Veterans Day through parades, ceremonies, and acts of appreciation that honor military service:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First, communities across the country organize public events such as parades and wreath-laying ceremonies, often featuring veterans, military bands, and civic leaders.<\/li>\n<li>Next, schools and organizations host assemblies and invite veterans to share their stories, fostering intergenerational understanding and gratitude.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, businesses actively participate by offering free meals, discounts, and promotions to veterans as a gesture of thanks.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, families take time to reflect, visit memorials, and share personal stories of service and sacrifice.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, many people express their appreciation through social media tributes, handwritten notes, or donations to veteran-focused charities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Through these diverse expressions of gratitude, Americans reaffirm their respect for those who served and renew their commitment to supporting veterans in everyday life.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-catholic-view\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Catholic View<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While Jesus never spoke directly about military service or national holidays, we can draw from His teachings to imagine how He might respond to the heart of Veterans Day:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/15?13\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John 15:13<\/a> \u2013 <em>\u201cNo one has greater love than this, to lay down one\u2019s life for one\u2019s friends.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/11?28\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew 11:28<\/a> \u2013 <em>\u201cCome to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/5?9\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew 5:9<\/a> \u2013 <em>\u201cBlessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many of these soldiers make many sacrifices to protect us. Some make the ultimate sacrifice. It takes a special type of person to put his\/her life on the line for people they do not even know. I want to give a special shout-out to my nephew for his service in Afghanistan and his service with the FDNY. I am very proud of the man you are.
