Answer the question of who performed well on the national stage.<\/li>\n
Make values ascendant and call out Romney for lying. A winning strategy does all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
On values: we heard many policy details and numbers last night, but underlying these layers is a difference of values and vision for America. We must raise values back up to the top.<\/li>\n
On facts: we must not let the lies go unaddressed, but not let values go either. Romney is misrepresenting his own plans because he knows the vision and values they represent are unpopular. Expose the truth in a way that makes the choice between the two visions in this election clear.<\/li>\n
On framing: this is about Romney vs. The Truth. This allows us to move past the debate performances and towards the broader themes characterizing this election.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

THE PERFORMANCES
\nWhat happened last night? Just what we expected:<\/em><\/p>\n
\n
The incumbent president, who\u2019s been busy governing the country, faced a challenger who has nothing else to do other than try to unseat his opponent.<\/li>\n
Romney practiced for this particular debate all summer, after years of running for president and squaring off against his primary opponents in\u00a0 23 debates<\/a>\u00a0this year alone.<\/li>\n
True to his campaign\u2019s\u00a0 declaration<\/a>\u00a0that they do not care what the fact checkers say, Romney kept repeating the same falsehoods he has used throughout his campaign.<\/li>\n
If a politician is\u00a0 willing to say anything<\/a>, it\u2019s not hard to win. If Romney won last night, then\u00a0 the truth lost<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

THE VALUES UNDERLYING THE TRUTH
\nTAXES<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n
Romney\u2019s tax plan really does raise taxes on the middle class to cut them for millionaires.<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\n
Do we want a country where everybody pays their fair share \u2014 or a country where working families pay higher taxes than millionaires and billionaires?<\/li>\n
Do we want a country where \u201cwe\u2019re all in it together,\u201d with citizens lifting up and taking responsibility for one another and for themselves \u2014 or \u201cI\u2019ve got mine, you\u2019re on your own\u201d?<\/li>\n
Let\u2019s remember what Romney said behind closed doors about half of America, including working families, students, and retired seniors: they\u2019re irresponsible dependents who aren\u2019t paying taxes.<\/li>\n
No wonder his\u00a0 tax plan<\/a>\u00a0would make you pay more so the richest few can pay less. It\u2019s as if Romney thinks that struggling people aren\u2019t struggling enough and our middle class isn\u2019t already bearing enough of the burden.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
FACT: Romney\u2019s\u00a0 $5 trillion tax plan<\/a>\u00a0would\u00a0 cut taxes for a wealthy and raise them for working families<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 making a middle class family pay\u00a0 $2,000 more<\/a>\u00a0so a multimillionaire can pay $250,000 less.<\/p>\n
FACT: Independent think tanks and fact checkers have clearly established that\u00a0 what Romney is claiming<\/a>\u00a0about his tax plan \u2014 cut middle class taxes, keep them the same for the wealthy, and not add to the deficit \u2014 is\u00a0 mathematically impossible<\/a>.<\/p>\n
FACT: The five studies that Romney cited to back up his claims, as well as criticisms of the Tax Policy Center\u2019s findings, don\u2019t\u00a0 exist<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0 contradict<\/a>\u00a0Romney\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n
\n
\n<\/div>\n
MEDICARE<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n
Romney\u2019s plan really is to replace guaranteed Medicare with little vouchers and make seniors go fight the insurance companies.<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\n
Americans pay into Medicare with each paycheck, expecting that Medicare will be there for them so they can retire in dignity.<\/li>\n
After a lifetime of working hard and playing by the rules, our seniors deserve to expect that Medicare will continue to guarantee their health coverage for life.<\/li>\n
True to the idea that we\u2019re in this together and we\u2019re stronger for it, Medicare uses the massive negotiating clout of the nearly 50 million Americans with Medicare now to keep costs down for all.<\/li>\n
But Romney would end\u00a0 Medicare<\/a>\u00a0as we know it. He wants to give seniors a little coupon and make them go fight with the big insurance companies to get coverage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
FACT:\u00a0 Obamacare preserves every dime of Medicare benefits<\/a>\u00a0and guarantees your Medicare coverage for life. Romney-Ryan does not.<\/p>\n
FACT: Romney is attacking Obamacare for the same $700 billion savings from cutting waste out of Medicare \u2014 which he supported. Except now\u00a0 he\u2019d put that waste back into Medicare<\/a>, shortening the life of its trust fund.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n
DEFICIT<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n
The best way to deal with the deficit is to put Americans back to work \u2014 not fire Big Bird.<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

FACT: Under President Obama, the private sector has created\u00a0 five million jobs over the past 30 months<\/a>. Romney\u2019s \u201cjobs plan\u201d would mean\u00a0 massive layoffs<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 two million jobs lost in the next two years alone.<\/p>\n
FACT: Actually, contrary to Romney\u2019s lie about doubling the deficit,\u00a0 President Obama cut the deficit<\/a>. Whether you\u2019re comparing the deficit now to its size when Obama took office or as a share of the economy, the deficit is lower.<\/p>\n
FACT: Romney\u2019s own party\u00a0 pushed<\/a>\u00a0for the Bush policies behind today\u2019s deficits \u2014 including the wasteful Bush tax cuts for the richest 2% and the recession that threw taxpayers off their jobs.<\/p>\n
