{"id":3359,"date":"2015-10-06T09:36:29","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T14:36:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/faithonthecouch\/?p=3359"},"modified":"2015-10-06T09:36:29","modified_gmt":"2015-10-06T14:36:29","slug":"pphubb-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/faithonthecouch\/2015\/10\/pphubb-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Pphubb You."},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/335\/2015\/10\/phubbing.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-3360\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/335\/2015\/10\/phubbing-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"phubbing\" width=\"327\" height=\"210\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/More2liferadio\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">More2Life Radio,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tobinstitute.org\/about\/staff\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bill Donaghy<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tobinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Theology of the Body Institute <\/a>spoke of what he called, \u201cDigital Contraception\u201d; times when we let screens (phones, tablets, laptops, etc) come between us and opportunities for communion with others. \u00a0I didn\u2019t discover this in time for yesterday\u2019s show, but psychology actually has a name for this phenomenon, \u201cPartner Phone Snubbing\u201d or \u201cPphubbing.\u201d \u00a0A new study by Baylor University examines the frequency and impact of Pphubbing on intimate relationships\u2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>A provocative new study suggests our trusted partner and confidant \u2014 the\u00a0cell phone \u2014 can harm interpersonal relationships and lead to higher levels of depression.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>Baylor University researchers James A. Roberts, Ph.D., and Meredith David, Ph.D.,\u00a0conducted two separate surveys, accounting for a total of 453 adults in the U.S., with the intention of learning the relational effects of \u201cPphubbing,\u201d or \u201cpartner phone snubbing.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>Pphubbing is described in the study as the extent to which people use or are distracted by their cellphones while in the company of their relationship partners.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>\u201cWhat we discovered was that when someone perceived that their partner phubbed them, this created conflict and led to lower levels of reported relationship satisfaction,\u201d Roberts said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>\u201cThese lower levels of relationship satisfaction, in turn, led to lower levels of life satisfaction and, ultimately, higher levels of depression.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>The first survey of 308 adults helped Roberts and David develop a \u201cPartner Phubbing Scale,\u201d a nine-item scale of common smartphone behaviors that respondents identified as snubbing behaviors.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>The resulting scale includes statements such as:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #111111;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>My partner places his or her cellphone where they can see it when we are together;<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>My partner keeps his or her cellphone in their hand when he or she is with me;<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>My partner glances at his\/her cellphone when talking to me;<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>If there is a lull in our conversation, my partner will check his or her cellphone.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>The development of the scale is significant, the study states, because it demonstrates that \u201cPphubbing is conceptually and empirically different from attitude toward cellphones, partner\u2019s cellphone involvement, cellphone conflict, and cellphone addiction.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>The second survey of 145 adults measured Pphubbing among romantic couples. This was done, in part, by asking those surveyed to respond to the nine-item scale developed in the first survey.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>Other areas of measurement in the second survey included cellphone conflict, relationship satisfaction, life satisfaction, depression, and interpersonal attachment style (e.g., \u201canxious attachment\u201d describes people who are less secure in their relationship).<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111;\"><em>Results of the survey showed that:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #111111;\">\n<ul style=\"color: #111111;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>46.3 percent of the respondents reported being phubbed by their partner;<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>22.6 percent said this phubbing caused conflict in their relationships;<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>36.6 percent reported feeling depressed at least some of the time.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>Overall, only 32 percent of respondents stated that they were very satisfied with their relationship, the study shows.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>\u201cIn everyday interactions with significant others, people often assume that momentary distractions by their cell phones are not a big deal,\u201d David said. \u201cHowever, our findings suggest that the more often a couple\u2019s time spent together is interrupted by one individual attending to his\/her cellphone, the less likely it is that the other individual is satisfied in the overall relationship.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>\u201cSpecifically, momentary distractions by one\u2019s cellphone during time spent with a significant other likely lowers the significant other\u2019s satisfaction with their relationship, and could lead to enhanced feelings of depression and lower well-being of that individual.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>\u201cThus, when spending time with one\u2019s significant other, we encourage individuals to be cognizant of the interruptions caused by their cellphones, as these may well be harmful to their relationship.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>Roberts explained that those with anxious attachment styles (less secure in their relationship) were more bothered (reported higher levels of cellphone conflict) than those with more secure attachment styles (more secure in their relationship). In addition, lower levels of relationship satisfaction \u2014 stemming, in part, from being Pphubbed \u2014 led to decreased life satisfaction that, in turn, led to higher levels of depression.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>Given the ever-increasing use of smartphones to communicate between romantic partners, the study helps to understand how the use of smartphones can impact not only satisfaction with romantic relationships, but also personal well-being, Roberts said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>\u201cWhen you think about the results, they are astounding,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cSomething as common as cellphone use can undermine the bedrock of our happiness: our relationships with our romantic partners.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><em>The study is published\u00a0in the journal\u00a0Computers in Human Behavior.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">For more great tips on how you can experience greater love in your life, check out the new, revised and expanded edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/For-Better-Forever-Revised-Expanded\/dp\/1612789064\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>For Better\u2026FOREVER!
