I wanted to include more commentary on each book, but as is I had to stretch my margins to fit everything onto one front-back piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>I also trucked in all the paper versions of the books I own on this list, and set up a table near the exit so people could flip through those they were interested in. List below, commentary below that.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Old Testament Resources<\/strong>\u2013 (not a substitute for regular reading of the scriptures themselves)<br>\nMany of these are available at public or college libraries, or through used book sellers like abe.com<\/p>\n<p>*= \u201cget one of these if you can\u2019t get anything else\u201d;<\/p>\n<p>E= available electronically from http:\/\/logos.com which is iPhone, Mac, and PC compatible. (Note that the iphone and Mac apps are in early stages. The Mac is an alpha which functions as a reader, but lacks more complicated functions.)<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Translations &amp; Bibles<\/strong> \u2013 the most basic resource for understanding. These are cheapest from cbd.com.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> E- NRSV (New Revised Standard Version)- the scholarly standard in translation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> <em>Jewish Study Bible<\/em>\u2013 Excellent translation (the NJPS), with notes and essays from a scholarly conservative Judaic perspective, very useful for LDS understanding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> E- NIV (New International Version) or NIV Study Bible- useful notes from a conservative Evangelical\u00a0 perspective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Backgrounds<\/strong> (Gives an overview of the historical setting, culture, wordview, authorship and dating, etc. of the books of the Bible, with many pictures, diagrams, illustrations, maps, etc.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*- Holzapfel, Richard Neitzel, Dana M. Pike, and David Rolph Seely.<em> Jehovah and the World of the Old Testament<\/em>. Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 2009. Highly recommended to begin!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>E- <em>Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary: Old Testament<\/em>. Ed. John H. Walton. 5 vols. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2009.- Like the volume above, but 5x the length, footnotes, references, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>General Books<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Alter, Robert. <em>The Art of Biblical Narrative<\/em>: Basic Books, 1981.- Just as Elder Maxwell\u2019s alliteration rarely translated well into foreign languages, many connections and hints made in Hebrew are lost in English. Alter explains the literary aspects of the text, &amp; brings out meaning and connections lost in translation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Brettler, Marc Zvi. <em>How to Read the Bible<\/em>. Philadelphia: Jewish Publication Society, 2005. Brettler explains how he understands the Bible as both an Orthodox Jew and Hebrew Bible professor at Brandeis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Levenson, Jon D. <em>Sinai &amp; Zion- an Entry into the Jewish Bible<\/em>. San Francisco: HarperCollins, 1985. Levenson, a Jewish professor at Harvard, explains some of the central Israelite concepts of the OT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>*-Enns, Peter.<em> Inspiration and Incarnation- Evangelicals and the Problem of the Old Testament<\/em>. Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2005. Enns, an Evangelical scholar trained at Harvard, addresses several preconceptions about the OT that cause difficulties. \u201cThe problems many of us feel regarding the Bible have less to do with the Bible and more to do with our own preconceptions.\u201d Though he addresses Evangelicals, many of their preconceptions are commonly shared by LDS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Kugel, James. <em>How to Read the Bible: A Guide to Scripture Then and Now<\/em>. An Orthodox Jew retired from Harvard, Kugel explains how ancient and modern Bible interpreters read differently and why.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Stager, Lawrence and Philip King. <em>Life in Biblical Israel<\/em> (Westminster John Knox, 2002) Focuses on culture and daily life among the Israelites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Introductions<\/strong>\u2013 (giving an overview of the history and interpretation of each book)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Coogan, Michael D. <em>The Old Testament- a Historical and Literary Introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures<\/em> (New York: Oxford, 2006) Excellent, shorter than below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> E- Collins, John J. <em>Introduction to the Hebrew Bible<\/em>. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2004. (Incl. CD-rom with full text and pop-up scripture references, Logos format)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Studies in Scripture<\/em>, vol III, IV Deseret Book. (available on-line from Gospelink.com)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bible Dictionaries<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <em>Oxford Companion to the Bible<\/em> (available at oxfordbiblicalscholarship.com) 1 volume.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> E- <em>IVP Dictionary of the Old Testament<\/em> (3 volumes, available individually, conservative perspective)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> E-<em>Anchor Bible Dictionary<\/em> The 6-volume scholarly standard. (Has been quoted in General Conference once.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Commentaries<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> E-<em>Harper\u2019s Bible Commentary<\/em> or E \u2013<em>Oxford Bible Commentary<\/em> both good one-volume commentaries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> E-<em>JPS Torah Commentary<\/em>\u2013 Excellent multi-volume commentary from Jewish perspective. Only Genesis-Deuteronomy and a few other volumes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> E-<em>NIV Application Commentary<\/em>\u2013 Multi-volume commentary provides many useful \u201cpreaching tips\u201d or in LDS terms, application to daily life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>History<\/strong>\u2013 These represent balanced scholarship. <em>Ancient Israel<\/em> is easiest to digest.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>E-<em>Ancient Israel- From Abraham to the Roman Destruction of the Temple,<\/em> ed. Hershel Shanks.  Available cheapest in new form from  www.bib-arch.org<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> <em>The Oxford History of the Biblical World<\/em>, ed. Michael Coogan. (Oxford Press, 2001)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Miller, Maxwell and John Hayes \u2013 <em>A History of Ancient Israel and Judah<\/em> (Westminster John Knox, 2006)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Hebrew<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> E-<em>Strong\u2019s Concordance<\/em> + E- <em>New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology<\/em>\u2013 Do not use Strong\u2019s Concordance alone!! This requires some explanation. See BYU Prof. James Faulconer\u2019s Scripture Study: Tools and Suggestions or ask me about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In particular, I stressed that the easiest way to get new understanding and regain enthusiasm for the OT is to get a new translation, and directed them to my handout\/post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithpromotingrumor.com\/2007\/02\/elder-mcconkie-and-targumim-or-how-to-help-lds-read-non-kjv-versions\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here <\/a>if they feel that reading a non-KJV for personal study is somehow verboten in the Church.<\/p>\n<p>I highly recommended the new <em>Jehovah and the World of the Old Testament<\/em>, which has been reviewed in the Naccle <a href=\"http:\/\/bycommonconsent.com\/2009\/11\/15\/jehovah-and-the-world-of-the-ot\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairblog.org\/2009\/11\/16\/jehovah-in-old-testament-world\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeongoldplates.com\/2009\/11\/old-testament-narratives-historicity.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, I plugged Peter Enns\u2019 <em>Inspiration and Incarnation:Evangelicals and the Problem of the Old Testament<\/em>. It\u2019s very applicable to <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormons<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>My next three posts will cover Bibles, some further comments on <em>Jehovah and the World of the Old Testament<\/em>, and Enns book.
