{"id":5723,"date":"2012-02-17T11:04:14","date_gmt":"2012-02-17T16:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/faithpromotingrumor\/?p=5723"},"modified":"2012-02-17T14:23:25","modified_gmt":"2012-02-17T19:23:25","slug":"have-you-been-saved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/faithpromotingrumor\/2012\/02\/have-you-been-saved\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Have You Been Saved?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>To oversimplify things a bit, Mormon notions of salvation are more consistent with Paul, while Evangelical notions of salvation are more consistent with deutero-Pauline ideas. \u00a0In essence, <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormons<\/a>, like Paul, believe that salvation is a future event; while Evangelicals, like deutero-Pauline authors, believe that salvation is a present event.<\/p>\n<p>The deutero-Pauline letter Ephesians claims, \u201cby grace you have been saved\u201d (Eph 2:5, NRSV). \u00a0The deutero-Pauline text Colossians agrees, and goes even further, explaining that you have died and have been raised already (Col 3:1-3). \u00a0Saved in the past tense? \u00a0Already raised? \u00a0Yes, these texts consider that it is at baptism or some other event that has already brought about salvation.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In the genuine Pauline letters, \u201csalvation\u201d and \u201csave\u201d are only used in the future tense. \u00a0If you asked Paul, \u201chave you been saved,\u201d he would say, \u201cno.\u201d \u00a0For Paul, salvation came either after death or with the (impending) coming of the Lord. \u00a0One could not claim to be saved yet, not because of an insecurity about one\u2019s status before the Lord, but simply because salvation had not yet come.<\/p>\n<p>The question of whether salvation was a present or future event was of great concern in early Christianity. \u00a0The same tension may be found in the sayings of Jesus concerning the coming of the Kingdom. \u00a0For some sayings, the Kingdom was a future event, either after death or precipitated by some cosmic occurrence. \u00a0For others, \u201cthe Kingdom of God is among you\u201d (Luke 17:20-21). \u00a0 \u00a0Other deutero-Pauline epistles like 2 Thess try to warn against presentist understandings of the coming of the Lord, chastizing those who have quit their jobs, urging the readers \u201cnot to be quickly shaken in mind\u2026that the day of the Lord is already here.\u201d (2 Thess 2:2).<\/p>\n<p>For what it\u2019s worth, the Book of Mormon seems to be aware of this tension within the Pauline (including deutero-Pauline) corpus. \u00a0In fact, the most famous Book of Mormon text on grace and salvation is really a commentary on Eph 2:5: \u201cby grace ye are saved.\u201d (KJV). \u00a02 Nephi 25:23 interprets this past tense notion of being saved as a conditional: \u201cby grace\u00a0that we are saved, after all we can do.\u201d \u00a0The near quotation of Eph 2:5 in Nephi\u2019s formulation suggests that this text is best understood as a commentary on Eph 2:5. \u00a0The main thrust of Nephi\u2019s point is to reconcile the present-oriented understanding of salvation in the deutero-Pauline epistles with the future-oriented Pauline theology. \u00a0Mormon notions of salvation derive\u00a0from this Pauline view.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To oversimplify things a bit, Mormon notions of salvation are more consistent with Paul, while Evangelical notions of salvation are more consistent with deutero-Pauline ideas. \u00a0In essence, Mormons, like Paul, believe that salvation is a future event; while Evangelicals, like deutero-Pauline authors, believe that salvation is a present event.
