Any of these feel familiar?<\/strong><\/p>\nThe thing about Shifting that\u2019s important to say is that it\u2019s not a free-fall.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not a place where everything comes apart and we lose everything (that comes later for a lot of us).<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not where there\u2019s no turning back.<\/p>\n
In fact, we have some control over Shifting. We can choose what to do with what\u2019s being stirred up. During this season, most of us still stay in churches and ministries.<\/p>\n
People around us may see us the same, but we know something\u2019s different inside. <\/strong><\/p>\nThis stage is definitely not drastic yet, and there\u2019s no big loss here; it\u2019s just the rumbly stirring of dissatisfaction, disengagement, apathy, and doubt.<\/p>\n
Even though I didn\u2019t begin a drastic Unravel until 11 years\u00a0ago, I started shifting many years before that when I kept bumping into some of the same things in the churches I was part of\u2013a focus on \u201cus and them\u201d, unhealthy leadership, an attempt to push real feelings down and cover them up with bible verses, a haughty certainty about the Bible that stopped feeling comforting, a divide between the sick and the healthy and the strong and the weak.<\/p>\n
When I started to doubt in the early stages of Shifting, I heard a loud voice in my head saying, You must be doing something wrong<\/em>.<\/p>\nOther shifters hear similar messages:<\/p>\n
Everyone else seems fine, so there must be something wrong with me.<\/em><\/p>\nIf I can just pray harder, believe more, or do more, I\u2019ll get the good feelings back.<\/em><\/p>\nI expect too much\u2014after all, no church is perfect.<\/em><\/p>\nWho said we were supposed to feel good anyway?<\/em><\/p>\nGod must be trying to teach me something and I\u2019m just not getting it (p. 47-48).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\nThe noise we hear during Shifting isn\u2019t just about what\u2019s wrong with us. It can also be about questions we start to ask, theological and leadership disparities we start to observe, or feelings we can\u2019t seem to shake (p. 48):<\/p>\n
\n- Was all of this time spent in church a waste?<\/li>\n
- How much can I really question without getting in trouble with other people or even with God?<\/li>\n
- Am I the only one who feels this way? Why haven\u2019t I heard anyone else talk about this stuff before?<\/li>\n
- How many friends will I lose? Will I ever be able to find a spouse if I don\u2019t believe certain things?<\/li>\n
- Is the Bible really inerrant, without one single mistake?<\/li>\n
- What about the other religions of the world? Are all of those people completely wrong, destined for hell?<\/li>\n
- What if I no longer believe homosexuality is a sin and I say that out loud?<\/li>\n
- Why are my atheist and agnostic friends treating me with more kindness and respect than my Christian brothers and sisters do?<\/li>\n
- What will my parents think?<\/li>\n
- What if I\u2019m being deceived and giving into the world?<\/li>\n
- What will I do for a living if I am no longer in ministry?<\/li>\n
- Is this what Jesus really had in mind for church?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
These are just a few, but I\u2019d love to know what you would add to this list.<\/strong><\/p>\nDepending on where you\u2019re\u2013what\u2019s either rattling in your head now about your shifting faith or was part of your past when things had just started getting rumbly and you weren\u2019t sure what to do about it?<\/p>\n
