Maybe it was because he\u2019d been watching <em>Dennis the Menace<\/em> a few times too many. He does resemble Dennis a bit, come to think of it.\u00a0More likely it\u00a0had more to do with his siblings labeling him as just that on far too many occasions. You\u2019ll be happy to know he has now switched to another, more fitting word \u2014 <em>handsome.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Take a simple self esteem test. How would you describe yourself in just one word? Or, if you told, would you have to kill us?<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/billintheblank\/files\/2012\/11\/top-secret.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1365\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/billintheblank\/files\/2012\/11\/top-secret.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"606\" height=\"378\"><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Assuming for the moment that your word would not be <em>psychotic,<\/em> I was reminded of the power of the words we say to ourselves as I read John Maxwell\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1599953668\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1599953668&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=billint-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth: Live Them and Reach Your Potential<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important;margin: 0px !important\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=billint-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1599953668\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\">. Maxwell quoted Kevin Hall\u2019s book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0061964549\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0061964549&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=billint-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Aspire: Discovering Your Purpose Through the Power of Words<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important;margin: 0px !important\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=billint-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0061964549\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\">\u00a0which is now on my Amazon wish list:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The first thing I do when I am coaching someone who aspires to stretch, grow, and go higher in life is to have that person select the one word that best describes him or her.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That got me thinking: what would be my word?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/billintheblank\/2012\/09\/do-you-know-the-9-words-that-change-everything\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">As I\u2019ve noted before, words have meaning<\/a>. And power.\u00a0Words are tags for ideas. And ideas have consequences.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nkjv\/proverbs\/23-7.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"> \u201cAs a man thinks, so is he.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Christ-followers,we should be among the first to understand this. Consider a brief survey of Scripture:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We know that the worlds were framed by the Word of God. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/esv\/hebrews\/11-3.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Heb. 11: 3)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Words have the power of life and death. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/esv\/proverbs\/18-21.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">(Prov. 18:21)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>We will be justified or condemned based on our words. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/esv\/matthew\/12-37.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">(Matt. 12:37)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>We will be judged for every idle word we speak \u2014 both outwardly and inwardly.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nkjv\/matthew\/12-36.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">(Matt. 12:36)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we are what we think, we need to remember that what we think is determined by the words spoken to us, even by ourselves.<\/p>\n<h4>What\u2019s Your Word?<\/h4>\n<p>What is the one word that best describes you? And are you courageous enough to share it?<\/p>\n<p>Mine is <em>creative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t always that. There were significant stretches in my life where I thought that word was only for other people. I fell into the trap of the fear of man. I let other people define me. Even now I fear someone might laugh when they read this. (Fortunately, I can\u2019t hear you now \u2014\u00a0although I\u2019ll be looking for comments.)<\/p>\n<p>Pssst. Listen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to accept who people say you have to be.\u201d ~ Johnnetta McSwain<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t really matter what other people say. You won\u2019t have to answer for the words they use about you, just the ones you use about them \u2014 and about\u00a0yourself.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Go ahead.
