Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.<\/em> ~Gal. 3:24-25<\/p>\n Believers are no longer under the law. We have been justified, are in the process of being sanctified, and are waiting to be glorified. Why, then, is it so easy to live as if we must measure up to the law?<\/p>\n
We\u00a0should<\/em> be doing or best to live up to the law. Not out of a \u201cif I do this, I will go to Heaven\u201d mentality, but out of a \u201cI\u2019m going to Heaven because Christ paid my sin debt, and\u00a0out of\u00a0thankfulness for God\u2019s salvation,\u00a0I refuse to go\u00a0back to my old sins or give in to new sins\u201d mentality.<\/p>\n One type of thinking says that\u00a0we get to Heaven on\u00a0our own merit, so\u00a0we must try, try, and try again. The other says that a Mediator\u00a0whose name is\u00a0Jesus\u00a0has already made a way for\u00a0us to live in Heaven with God forever, and out of gratefulness,\u00a0we will not offend. Because the Lord already sees\u00a0us as righteous,\u00a0we want to\u00a0do\u00a0our best to live up to His assessment.<\/p>\n
Either way, we are going to fail. So the\u00a0question is: whose merit are we ultimately counting on to get us to Heaven? In\u00a0our heads,\u00a0we know it\u2019s Christ\u2019s merit. In\u00a0our actions,\u00a0we clearly believe at times it\u2019s\u00a0our own merit.\u00a0We simply forget, and start obeying out of fear of\u00a0our own failure rather than out of\u00a0awe, love, and thanksgiving that\u00a0we\u00a0have been, are being, and will be transformed.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Lord, free us from the tutor and point us toward your grace, love, and forgiveness. Help us to see the futility of self-focus and self-righteousness and make us keenly aware that without you, we can do nothing. You are our righteousness.
