Something in this won\u2019t<\/p>\n<p>let me go. Perhaps it\u2019s the image<\/p>\n<p>of someone playing music in the<\/p>\n<p>dark while we watch others like<\/p>\n<p>us meet life in silence. It makes<\/p>\n<p>me think of a caveman drumming<\/p>\n<p>a stone with a stick while his brother<\/p>\n<p>draws his bow but fails to shoot be-<\/p>\n<p>cause he loses himself in the bison<\/p>\n<p>grazing. Perhaps the playing of<\/p>\n<p>images in the dark and the play-<\/p>\n<p>ing of music while we watch is all<\/p>\n<p>to keep us from shooting. I think<\/p>\n<p>the brother who loses himself and<\/p>\n<p>Eileen\u2019s aunt playing Brahms in the<\/p>\n<p>dark are of the same tribe. Last night<\/p>\n<p>we went next door for a glass of wine<\/p>\n<p>with Stacy and Anders and their blind<\/p>\n<p>collie Kai broke my heart open a little<\/p>\n<p>further. He noses gently about every-<\/p>\n<p>thing and watching him find his way<\/p>\n<p>about the yard in the late sun feels<\/p>\n<p>like you and me when we put down<\/p>\n<p>our masks. Only when we rush do<\/p>\n<p>we bump and break things. Kai\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>soft, wide eyes search in their dark-<\/p>\n<p>ness for the shelf of late light and<\/p>\n<p>finding something, he rests his head<\/p>\n<p>in the open air, in the warm hand<\/p>\n<p>of eternity, feeling safe in a light<\/p>\n<p>he can\u2019t see.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other night at dinner Eileen tells us that her great aunt would play piano for silent movies.
