WHAT OTHERS HAVE TOUCHED<\/strong><\/p>\nWhen his grandson was born, he<\/p>\n
began collecting antique toys\u2014a torn<\/p>\n
doll, a wooden rabbit, a cloth bear.<\/p>\n
He loves to see his little one touch <\/p>\n
what others have touched.<\/p>\n
When told it had to go, she refused<\/p>\n
to cut the old apple tree, though its roots<\/p>\n
are buckling the driveway. She doesn\u2019t need<\/p>\n
the apples. It\u2019s the deer. Every fall she shakes<\/p>\n
the upper branches from a ladder. She loves<\/p>\n
the small thuds to the ground. She loves<\/p>\n
early coffee as they soft-hoof and nibble.<\/p>\n
When Jess and Laura were small, I <\/p>\n
bought earrings in Florence. I\u2019m saving <\/p>\n
them till they turn sixteen. I love think-<\/p>\n
ing of the earrings waiting in my closet<\/p>\n
for them to grow.<\/p>\n
When in Amsterdam, he thought<\/p>\n
the museums would grab him, but it<\/p>\n
was a sloppy Newfoundland wading<\/p>\n
in a reflecting pool; splashing patches<\/p>\n
of water filled with sun, then trying<\/p>\n
to bite the splashes. He loves to think<\/p>\n
of the soul\u2019s journey this way.<\/p>\n
When Grandma made potato pancakes<\/p>\n
on her small stove, it smelled like burnt<\/p>\n
French toast. I\u2019d sit on a stool in the corner<\/p>\n
and she\u2019d mat one on some napkins, blow<\/p>\n
on it, and give it to me. She\u2019s been gone<\/p>\n
twenty years. But I love how she<\/p>\n
cooks them for me in my dreams.<\/p>\n
