Each had a<br>\nquick smile and a deep laugh.<br>\nEach gave before being asked.<br>\nEach listened to whatever was<br>\ndifficult without looking away.<\/p>\n<p>They both died before I could<br>\nask. So where did I learn this?<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t teach someone to lean<br>\nin, to get up, to help out. We just<br>\noffer comfort and care, the way<br>\na fire warms with its flame.<\/p>\n<p>Yet their presence lifts me long<br>\nafter they\u2019re gone.
