Both my grandfathers had
\na hard life. Yet both loved life.
\nBoth loved people. Each had a
\nquick smile and a deep laugh.
\nEach gave before being asked.
\nEach listened to whatever was
\ndifficult without looking away.<\/p>\n

They both died before I could
\nask. So where did I learn this?<\/p>\n

You can\u2019t teach someone to lean
\nin, to get up, to help out. We just
\noffer comfort and care, the way
\na fire warms with its flame.<\/p>\n

Yet their presence lifts me long
\nafter they\u2019re gone. Whenever I
\nlisten or give, I feel them in
\nthe river of effort that has
\nkept us going for centuries.<\/p>\n
