The current version says this, among other things:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The colorful 40-year run of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/new-line-cinema-gasping-its-last-breath.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">New Line<\/a> is coming to an abrupt end, costing the jobs of most of the company\u2019s 600 staffers.<\/p>\n<p>The company \u2014 home to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/inklings-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Lord of the Rings<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/05\/superman-returns-new-trailer-now.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Austin Powers<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/11\/newsbites-tron-galactica-darkness.html#13\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Friday the 13th<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/horror-movies-boiled-to-their.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Nightmare on Elm Street<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/crunching-evan-almighty-s-numbers-some.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rush Hour<\/a>,\u201d \u201cThe Mask\u201d and \u201cBoogie Nights\u201d \u2014 will be folded into Warner Bros. as a small genre arm.<\/p>\n<p>But toppers <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/and-now-look-back-at-happier-times.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bob Shaye<\/a>, who founded the company in his New York apartment, and Michael Lynne will not be part of the package.<\/p>\n<p>No exact numbers have been divulged for how many of New Line\u2019s staffers will stay but the surviving entity will be a shell of its former self, refocusing on the horror, comedy and urban genre pics that helped put it on the map decades ago. . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/new-difficulties-for-new-line-and.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hobbit<\/a>\u201d has Guillermo Del Toro <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/guillermo-del-toro-to-direct-hobbit.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">in talks<\/a> to direct, and the picture will be unaffected by the ouster of Shaye and Lynne. Though the films won\u2019t be scripted until a director is hired, and Jackson wraps \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/my-interest-in-peter-jacksons.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Lovely Bones<\/a>,\u201d the expectation is that the films will be ready for release for Christmas 2011 and 2012. <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/harry-potter-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Harry Potter<\/a> will have wound down at WB by then, and the corporation will surely welcome another fantasy franchise that has an eager global audience waiting. New Line will distribute domestically, while MGM has international rights. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Incidentally, it occurs to me that the sequels to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/his-dark-materials-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Golden Compass<\/a><\/i> might not be <i>completely<\/i> out of the question yet.  If the first film continues to be <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/newsbites-oscars-trek-narnia-antichrist.html#10\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a success overseas<\/a>, and if the new arrangement allows Warner to distribute the sequels directly overseas instead of pre-selling the foreign-distribution rights, then Warner <i>could<\/i> decide that there is enough money to be made in the franchise <i>worldwide<\/i> to warrant a continuation of the trilogy.  I don\u2019t expect that Warner <i>will<\/i> decide to continue the trilogy \u2014 with two <i>Harry Potter<\/i> movies and two <i>Hobbit<\/i> movies to put out over the next four years, they\u2019ve got more than enough fantasy tentpoles to worry about for the next little while \u2014 but it is, at least, a possibility that I would not yet dismiss.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Variety has updated the story I linked to in my previous post a few times now.
