{"id":1013,"date":"2008-02-25T01:06:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-25T01:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/02\/a-brief-thought-about-the-toy-story-franchise\/"},"modified":"2008-02-25T01:06:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-25T01:06:00","slug":"a-brief-thought-about-the-toy-story-franchise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/02\/a-brief-thought-about-the-toy-story-franchise.html","title":{"rendered":"A brief thought about the Toy Story franchise."},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/x\/blogger\/7991\/933\/1600\/538952\/toystory.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"cursor:pointer;cursor:hand\" src=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/x\/blogger\/7991\/933\/400\/100892\/toystory.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><br><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">I hadn\u2019t planned on exposing my kids to Pixar so early in life \u2014 why not wait until they can \u201cappreciate\u201d it more, I figured \u2014 but the other kids at church today were watching <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/newsbites-vintner-legion-greenaway.html#8\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Toy Story 2<\/a><\/i>, so what could I do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then, tonight, while watching the Oscars with my family and some friends, I saw the clips from <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/11\/giving-rat-his-due.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ratatouille<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Gadzooks.  What incredible leaps Pixar has made in nine years.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m curious now to see if <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/toy-story-entire-trilogy-in-3-d.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Toy Story 3<\/a><\/i>, which is currently slated for release in 2010, will represent yet another massive leap forward in animation technology, or if the Pixar people will feel obliged to go \u201cretro\u201d to keep the new film more-or-less consistent with the first two films \u2014 both of which, you will recall, were produced way back in the previous century, back in the \u201990s, back in the Clinton era, etc.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s kind of like how Steven Spielberg has insisted the new <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/indiana-jones-real-american-hero.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Indiana Jones<\/a><\/i> movie will avoid the newfangled digital techniques wherever possible and stick to the visual-effects techniques that the first three films used back in the \u201980s, back in the Reagan era, etc.<\/p>\n<p>But the <i>Indiana Jones<\/i> movies have <i>always<\/i> been retro \u2014 each film is set about 50 years in the past, and each film is modeled after the <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/indy-iv-to-tackle-new-kind-of-cheesy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">cheesy B-movies<\/a> of those distant eras \u2014 so I imagine it would be kind of okay if the new one didn\u2019t feel like the most modern thing around.  The <i>Toy Story<\/i> movies, on the other hand, have always taken place more-or-less \u201ctoday\u201d, so it could be kind of odd if the new film felt like it wasn\u2019t on the cutting edge any more.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to think that it\u2019s the <i>story<\/i> that matters, more than anything else; and I\u2019d like to think that audiences would appreciate an aesthetic decision in favour of the more old-fashioned look.
