{"id":1066,"date":"2008-01-29T22:49:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-29T22:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/01\/oscar-winners-slipping-at-the-box-office-re-redux\/"},"modified":"2008-01-29T22:49:00","modified_gmt":"2008-01-29T22:49:00","slug":"oscar-winners-slipping-at-the-box-office-re-redux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/01\/oscar-winners-slipping-at-the-box-office-re-redux.html","title":{"rendered":"Oscar winners slipping at the box office re-redux"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/daily\/chart\/?sortdate=2008-01-27&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sunday<\/a>, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/oscar-nominations-themes-and-trends.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Juno<\/a><\/i> became the first and probably only one of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/oscar-nominations-my-own-two-bits.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2007\u2019s Best Picture nominees<\/a> to gross over $100 million \u2014 and that tells me I should probably follow up the posts I wrote in <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/oscar-winners-slipping-at-box-office.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2005<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/oscar-winners-slipping-at-box-office.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2006<\/a> on the relationship between the Oscars and the box office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/oscar\/chart\/?yr=2005&amp;view=fulldetail&amp;catid=1&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">2005<\/a> marked the first time since 1996 that the Best Picture <i>winner<\/i> did not gross at least $100 million, the first time since 1985 that not one of the Best Picture <i>nominees<\/i> grossed at least $100 million, and the first time in living memory that the Best Picture winner was not one of the Top 25 grossing films of its year.  (In fact, the winning film for that year, Paul Haggis\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/newsbites-cars-crash-bashing-id-trial.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Crash<\/a><\/i>, ranked way, way down at #49.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/oscar\/chart\/?yr=2006&amp;view=fulldetail&amp;catid=1&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">2006<\/a> brought a return to Hollywood form with the Best Picture victory of Martin Scorsese\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/gibson-turns-down-scorsese-role-again.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Departed<\/a><\/i>, which grossed $132.4 million and ranked #15 for the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/oscar\/chart\/?yr=2007&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">But now<\/a>, once again, the nominees pretty much all come from the \u201cindependent\u201d or \u201carthouse\u201d segment of the industry \u2014 with the exception of <i>Michael Clayton<\/i>, which was produced on a low budget and failed to find a very big audience, so it might just as well be an \u201cindependent\u201d or \u201carthouse\u201d movie anyway.  Here are the nominees\u2019 current grosses and box-office rankings, as of yesterday:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"disc\">\n<li><i>Juno<\/i> \u2014 $100,742,315 \u2014 27th<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/more-trivial-box-office-data.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">No Country for Old Men<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $51,956,842 \u2014 48th<\/li>\n<li><i>Michael Clayton<\/i> \u2014 $41,847,879 \u2014 62nd<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/my-interest-in-peter-jacksons.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Atonement<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $38,158,571 \u2014 70th<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/there-will-be-blood-poster-goes.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">There Will Be Blood<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $15,167,802 \u2014 123rd<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">Of course, these totals can and will change, and the rankings of the various films will no doubt slide up a bit.  In fact, all five nominees were in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2008&amp;wknd=04&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this past weekend<\/a>\u2018s Top 16, and only one of those films \u2014 <i>Michael Clayton<\/i> \u2014 was a re-issue; the rest have been playing more or less steadily, gradually building their respective audiences, since they were released one or two or three months ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Anything can happen between now and February 24, when the Academy Awards ceremony takes place, but right now it looks like <i>No Country for Old Men<\/i> will win the top prize \u2014 given that it won the DGA award and the SAG ensemble award last weekend \u2014 and if that turns out to be the case, then this could very well be the second time in my lifetime that the Oscar for Best Picture went to a film of unusually limited commercial appeal.
