But a story in the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/la-ca-dark13jan13,1,2294966.story?ctrack=2&amp;cset=true\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/i> suggests the film\u2019s real focus may be elsewhere:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>HEATH LEDGER and Aaron Eckhart, welcome to Hollywood\u2019s elite and gaudy Arkham club.<\/p>\n<p>In the highly anticipated new Batman film \u201cThe Dark Knight,\u201d which opens July 18, Ledger is stepping into the purple suit of the Joker, while Eckhart will portray Gotham City Dist. Atty. Harvey Dent, who starts the movie as a handsome lawman but ends up as Two-Face, the villain driven insane by disfiguring wounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarvey Dent is a tragic figure, and his story is the backbone of this film,\u201d says Christopher Nolan, the director of the acclaimed franchise-rejuvenating 2005 film \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/06\/batman-gets-new-lease-on-life.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Batman Begins<\/a>,\u201d who returns with Christian Bale again playing the caped crusader. \u201cThe Joker, he sort of cuts through the film \u2014 he\u2019s got no story arc, he\u2019s just a force of nature tearing through. Heath has given an amazing performance in the role, it\u2019s really extraordinary.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviemarketingmadness.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/16\/harvey-dent-is-the-focus-of-the-dark-knight\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chris<\/a> at Movie Marketing Madness responds by wondering if the studio has set itself up for \u201cpotential reputation damage\u201d by promising fans more of the Joker than they\u2019re actually going to get.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">2.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mailonsunday.co.uk\/pages\/live\/articles\/showbiz\/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=507920&amp;in_page_id=1773\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Mail on Sunday<\/a><\/i> says the makers of the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/harry-potter-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Harry Potter<\/a><\/i> movies are thinking of splitting the seventh and final book into two movies.  I\u2019m not sure what to make of this.  I have always said that each of the books should have been adapted as a TV mini-series, or as a complete season of a TV series, rather than a movie; but now that they have run with the one-movie-per-book format, a part of me figures they should stick with it.  At any rate, if the rumour is true, I wonder what they will call the second movie; will it be <i>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II<\/i>, or will they find some other object to put after the words \u201cand the\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">3.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/VR1117979189.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> reported on Wednesday that Warner Brothers had put the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/green-lantern-yet-another-superhero.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Justice League<\/a><\/i> movie on \u201cindefinite hold\u201d for two reasons: the writers\u2019 strike, and the tax-break situation in Australia, where they were planning on shooting the film.  But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117979263.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">on Thursday<\/a>, the Aussie government said the studio\u2019s decision had nothing to do with the tax breaks and was \u201cabsolutely confined to creative issues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">4.<\/a> So many of the \u201chistorical\u201d films made by <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/yet-another-kingdom-of-heaven-article.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ridley Scott<\/a> and Brian Grazer have been bogus to one degree or another, that it shouldn\u2019t come as any surprise to read <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20080118\/ap_en_mo\/film_american_gangster\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this Associated Press story<\/a> about their first collaboration, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/11\/newsbites-angels-nottingham-denzel.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">American Gangster<\/a><\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>NEW YORK \u2013 In \u201cAmerican Gangster,\u201d which is \u201cbased on a true story,\u201d Denzel Washington \u2014 as the `70s drug lord Frank Lucas \u2014 confidently marches deep into the jungles of Southeast Asia as the Vietnam War rages in the background. He is looking for drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Later, we see police break open the caskets of Vietnam casualties flown back to the States, searching for the heroin Lucas has audaciously hidden beneath the corpses. Then Lucas is shown as the dope dealer-turned-reformer as he exposes legions of corrupt police.<\/p>\n<p>Except none of the above ever happened. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">5.<\/a> Apparently Stephen Fry is writing the script for <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0855775\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dambusters<\/a><\/i>, Peter Jackson\u2019s remake of the classic World War II movie <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000H1RFSM\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Dam Busters<\/a><\/i> (1955), and he spoke to the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/ianwylie\/2008\/01\/stephen_fry_dambusters.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Manchester Evening News<\/a><\/i> recently about some of the things that will distinguish their movie from the original film \u2014 such as their use of information that was still top-secret back when the original film was made.  (Incidentally, as Fry notes, much of the Death Star battle in the original <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/stop-look-at-city-pronounce-warn-carry.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Star Wars<\/a><\/i> was <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/is-george-lucas-responsible-for.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">copied<\/a> from the original <i>Dam Busters<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">6.<\/a> As bad as some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/bourne-ultimatum-reviews-up.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Roger Moore<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/11\/hmmm-why-did-they-pick-these-four-faces.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">James Bond films<\/a> might be, I did enjoy listening to Moore\u2019s audio commentaries on those films \u2014 so I am mildly intrigued to read in the <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/ap\/20080115\/120043878000.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Associated Press<\/a> that Moore is now working on a memoir called <i>My Word Is My Bond<\/i>.  Say what you will about his films or his take on Ian Fleming\u2019s character, but Moore <i>is<\/i> a charming raconteur.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">7.<\/a> Governments are getting involved in filmmaking! <i>Variety<\/i> reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117979167.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">the provincial government of Quebec<\/a> has bought \u201c51% of the voting shares and a 38.5% ownership stake in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alliancefilms.com\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alliance Films<\/a>, Canada\u2019s leading film distributor\u201d \u2014 that\u2019s the company that distributes all the Miramax and New Line Cinema films in Canada, among others.  Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117979146.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">the United Nations<\/a> \u201cis backing a $100 million film fund aimed at combating stereotypes in movies. . . . Participant Prods., Summit Entertainment, ICM and YouTube are all believed to have signed on as partners to the fund, which has already secured investment of $10 million.\u201d  But will anyone actually <i>pay<\/i> to watch the movies that are made by this fund?<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Got a whole lot of catching up to do! 1.
