Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that Saul Zaentz, who has owned the film rights to The Hobbit<\/i> and The Lord of the Rings<\/a><\/i> since 1976, is suing New Line Cinema for the chance to look at their financial records, to see whether they have paid him his proper share of the profits from Peter Jackson\u2019s enormously successful trilogy.<\/span><\/p>\n

You may recall that Jackson himself is suing New Line<\/a> for pretty much the same thing \u2014 and that Jackson\u2019s lawsuit is one of the reasons why many people think a film version of The Hobbit<\/i> will never get made, at least not by these guys.<\/p>\n

You may also recall that Zaentz said over a year ago<\/a> that the film rights to The Hobbit<\/i> would be reverting to him in the very, very near future \u2014 and that Jackson would make the film, with or without New Line.<\/p>\n

And all of this is happening while New Line\u2019s latest attempt at a popular fantasy franchise \u2014 Chris Weitz\u2019s adaptation of The Golden Compass<\/a><\/i> \u2014 has been seriously underperforming<\/a> at the box office.<\/p>\n
