Perhaps 60-65 percent of that is covered by foreign pre-sales, but that also means New Line won\u2019t be able to make up a domestic shortfall with revenues from overseas, where \u201cCompass\u201d is at least posting respectable numbers. Expect a statement from New Line tomorrow that they expect \u201cCompass\u201d to play well through the holiday season, which is the standard Hollywood spin on underperforming tentpoles. Forget about the <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/newsbites-knife-hoodwinked-ratatouille.html#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">second<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/what-is-golden-compass-s-philosophy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">third<\/a> installments of <b><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/11\/philip-pullman-extended-e-mail.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Philip Pullman<\/a>\u2018s<\/b> trilogy, and <b><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/kidman-golden-compass-isnt-anti.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nicole Kidman<\/a><\/b> can probably say bye-bye to <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/04\/daniel-craig-on-philip-pullman-and.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">$15 million paydays<\/a> at least for a while.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117977367.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i>, which reported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117977224.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">yesterday<\/a> that the studio was predicting an opening weekend in the $30 million to $40 million range, adds this interesting data point of comparison:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> Pic\u2019s opening day take is on par with last December\u2019s \u201cEragon,\u201d also based on a young adult fantasy book, which grossed $8.7 million on its first day and $23.2 million during its opening weekend.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And <i>Eragon<\/i> had a <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=eragon.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">production budget<\/a> of only (only!) $100 million and opened against <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?yr=2006&amp;wknd=50&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">stiff competition<\/a> in the form of both <i>The Pursuit of Happyness<\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/04\/charlottes-web-bring-on-farting-cows.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Charlotte\u2019s Web<\/a><\/i>, whereas <i>The Golden Compass<\/i> was the only new wide release this week.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com\/golden-compass-2007s-biggest-bombs\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nikki Finke<\/a> of Deadline Hollywood Daily adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Wildly expensive flop should sink New Line Cinema chairman Bob Shaye\u2019s chances to stay on when his contract expires in 2008\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And, hmmm, if <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/new-line-cinema-blacklists-peter.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shaye<\/a> were to leave <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/and-now-look-back-at-happier-times.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">New Line Cinema<\/a>, maybe that would <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/will-peter-jackson-direct-hobbit-after.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">open the door<\/a> to the studio <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/will-rings-wizards-re-unite-in-compass.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">patching things up<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/jackson-will-definitely-direct-hobbit.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Peter Jackson<\/a> and getting started on that long-delayed movie version of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/new-info-on-two-hobbit-movies.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hobbit<\/a><\/i>.
