{"id":1198,"date":"2007-11-30T11:13:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-30T11:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2007\/11\/the-golden-compass-marketed-to-catholics\/"},"modified":"2007-11-30T11:13:00","modified_gmt":"2007-11-30T11:13:00","slug":"the-golden-compass-marketed-to-catholics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2007\/11\/the-golden-compass-marketed-to-catholics.html","title":{"rendered":"The Golden Compass &#8212; marketed to Catholics?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_MwnH1kpbPRM\/R1Bmyn-p0OI\/AAAAAAAAA34\/8C5Cj0g0asU\/s1600-R\/goldencompass-poison.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"cursor:pointer;cursor:hand\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_MwnH1kpbPRM\/R1Bmyn-p0OI\/AAAAAAAAA34\/gCAHWF7Ic0c\/s400\/goldencompass-poison.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><br><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">For the past few months, I have been asking certain Christian movie publicists if New Line Cinema would be making any effort to reach out to the religious market, to dampen the controversy over <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/his-dark-materials-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Golden Compass<\/a><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I have been on a few New Line junkets myself \u2014 for films like <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/newsbites-stiller-malick-sundance.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The New World<\/a><\/i> (2005) and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/nativity-story-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Nativity Story<\/a><\/i> (2006) \u2014 and last year another studio, Sony Pictures, made a point of \u201cengaging\u201d the religious media while publicizing the similarly controversial <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/da-vinci-code-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Da Vinci Code<\/a><\/i> (2006).<\/p>\n<p>But apparently, no, I was told it did not seem that New Line would be doing anything of that sort on this particular film.<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, comes word from Catholic blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/amywelborn.wordpress.com\/2007\/11\/30\/we-interrupt-this-immersion\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Amy Welborn<\/a> that New Line is hoping to advertise their film in diocesan publications.<\/p>\n<p>To make their case, the studio cites <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/data\/movies\/07mv242.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a positive review<\/a> of the film written by Harry Forbes and John Mulderig of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Office of Film and Broadcasting<\/a> \u2014 and the studio even claims to have \u201cspoken extensively about this film\u201d with Forbes.<\/p>\n<p>In response to that last claim, Welborn asks, \u201cWhat does <i>that<\/i> mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good question.  And I have no idea what the answer is.<\/p>\n<p>But I <i>will<\/i> note that Forbes does sort of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/christian-film-critics-and-conflicts-of.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">work for the studios<\/a>, in the sense that he is the Catholic representative on the MPAA\u2019s ratings appeal board, and I don\u2019t think it would be a stretch to hypothesize that long-term chumminess with the studios could have influenced his critical sensibilities.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the past few months, I have been asking certain Christian movie publicists if New Line Cinema would be making any effort to reach out to the religious market, to dampen the controversy over The Golden Compass.
