4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days<\/a><\/i> \u2014 the Romanian abortion drama that won the top prize at Cannes six months ago, and is easily one of the best films of this year \u2014 may be running into some trouble, audience-wise, as it leaves the festival circuit and moves into more mainstream venues.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeffrey Wells, the Hollywood Elsewhere blogger who called the film a \u201cmasterpiece<\/a>\u201d a few weeks ago, says he has heard rumblings<\/a> from within the Academy\u2019s ranks that the film \u2014 which opens in the U.S. in January, during awards season \u2014 might not even be nominated<\/i> for the Best Foreign Language Film award:<\/p>\n

\u201cSome felt it was a masterpiece and others didn\u2019t,\u201d according to a publicist. The journalist says he heard that some complained that Cristian Mungiu\u2019s film<\/a> is \u201ctoo slow\u201d and that some \u201cdidn\u2019t like the fetus on the floor shot.\u201d The publicist says that \u201csome complained about Oleg Mutu\u2019s static camera work\u201d as well as \u201csome of the hand-held tracking shots.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In related news, I was surprised today to discover that the film has already left Vancouver. It opened here two weeks ago and its first week was pretty standard \u2014 matinees, evening shows, the works \u2014 but then, in its second week, it was relegated to one screening per night at 10pm. And now, it\u2019s gone. Yikes.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, it seems to be playing still in Toronto<\/a> and Montreal<\/a>, and perhaps it\u2019s playing in other Canadian cities as well. But I\u2019m still a little shocked to see that it\u2019s left my town so quickly \u2014 especially since I was planning to see it a second time before revising my review<\/a> for an American outlet or two.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
