Gibson has since added an extra \u201cthe\u201d to give the film its present title.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Gibson and his movie continue to be dogged by controversy over its allegedly anti-Semitic elements, but he recently showed a rough cut of  the film to Billy Graham, who gave it his thumbs-up, and Pope John Paul II, who may or may not have approved of the film, depending on which  anonymous Vatican source one believes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe film is faithful to the Bible\u2019s teaching that we are all  responsible for Jesus\u2019 death, because we all have sinned,\u201d said Graham. For his part, the Pope, according to an anonymous source quoted by the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/nationalcatholicreporter.org\/word\/pfw121903.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">National Catholic Reporter<\/a><\/i>, kept his response to five simple words: \u201cIt  is as it was.\u201d But in a subsequent story, the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20040114054657\/http:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/data\/stories\/cns\/20031224.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Catholic News Service<\/a> quoted another anonymous source who said the Pope made  no such comment.<\/p>\n<p>Jewish response to the film remains mixed. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2003\/nov\/28\/news\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rabbi A. James Rudin<\/a>, the American Jewish Committee\u2019s senior advisor on interreligious affairs, has said that Jewish leaders should not boycott the film outright but, rather, should use the film to explain how depictions of Christ\u2019s death have stoked anti-Semitism in the past.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20040214023519\/http:\/\/www.townhall.com\/columnists\/dennisprager\/dp20031028.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dennis Prager<\/a>, who has worked closely with conservative Christians, also expressed reservations. \u201cI cannot say that I am happy this film was made,\u201d he wrote. \u201cNevertheless, if the vast majority of Christians and Jews of goodwill try hard to understand what film the other is watching, some  good can yet result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, some Christians have raised concerns about the film\u2019s  possible obsession with the graphic details of crucifixion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20040414202405\/http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/easterbrook.mhtml?pid=816\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gregg Easterbrook<\/a>, a Presbyterian, suggested in his online blog at <i>The New Republic<\/i> that Gibson may be sensationalizing the death of Christ, the same way his other historical films have sensationalized violence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20040402025751\/http:\/\/www.frederica.com\/orthodox\/meaning_of_his_suffering.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Frederica Mathewes-Green<\/a>, who is Orthodox, wrote a Beliefnet column (and a follow-up essay on the history of the atonement on her web site) exploring the possible theological problems that arise from fixating on the wounds of Christ, rather than on his triumph over death.<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20040211151833\/http:\/\/www.stamforddio.org\/index.cfm\/NewsItem?id=89708&amp;From=Home\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Archbishop Stefan Soroka<\/a> of the Ukrainian Archdiocese of Philadelphia, who has actually seen the film, called it \u201cshallow\u201d in an article for his archdiocesan newspaper. \u201cFrankly, without the hype, this movie will not interest many viewers because it fails to offer hope,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI would not recommend the movie to my friends nor to the faithful \u2014 and particularly the young \u2014 because the film, while interesting in the  way some things are portrayed, particularly evil, lacks content to really engage my interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For their part, the <i>New York Post<\/i> obtained a <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20031204194527\/http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/entertainment\/10963.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">bootleg copy<\/a> of the rough cut and showed it to five people, four of whom \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20031202155045\/http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/entertainment\/10960.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a Catholic priest<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20031204193358\/http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/entertainment\/10961.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a rabbi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20031204193721\/http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/entertainment\/10962.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a professor of religion<\/a>, and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20031126195224\/http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/entertainment\/10954.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Post<\/a><\/i> film critic Lou Lumenick \u2014 did not care for it in its present form. But even the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20031202153858\/http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/entertainment\/10959.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Baptist layperson<\/a> who liked the film agreed with the others that it dwelled  on the violence too much.<\/p>\n<p>At least we now know how long we\u2019ll have to wait before we can see the film and evaluate it for ourselves. Newmarket, the distributor behind such indie hits as <i>Whale Rider<\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/memento\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Memento<\/a><\/i>, plans to release the film in the United States on Ash Wednesday (February 25).
