I have no idea how seriously I want to take this \u2014 it is<\/i> about a Rambo movie, after all \u2014 but for what it\u2019s worth, the Associated Press<\/a> recently spoke to Sylvester Stallone about recent events in Myanmar<\/a> and Stallone\u2019s experiences shooting John Rambo<\/a><\/i> there:<\/span><\/p>\n

Sylvester Stallone said he and his \u201cRambo\u201d sequel movie crew recently witnessed the human toll of unspeakable atrocities while filming along the Myanmar border.<\/p>\n

\u201cI witnessed the aftermath \u2013 survivors with legs cut off and all kinds of land mine injuries, maggot-infested wounds and ears cut off. We saw many elephants with blown off legs. We hear about Vietnam and Cambodia and this was more horrific,\u201d Stallone told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Monday.<\/p>\n

Stallone returned eight days ago from shooting \u201cJohn Rambo,\u201d the fourth movie in the action series, on the Salween River separating Thailand and Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a hellhole beyond your wildest dreams,\u201d Stallone said. \u201cAll the trails are mined. The only way into Burma is up the river.\u201d<\/p>\n

And this was before the crackdown last week against the largest pro-democracy protests in Myanmar in two decades. After the government increased fuel prices in August, public anger turned to mass protest against 45 years of military dictatorship. Last week, soldiers responded by opening fire with automatic weapons on unarmed demonstrators. . . .<\/p>\n

The \u201cRambo\u201d script, written long before the current Myanmar uprising, features boatman John Rambo \u2013 the Vietnam War-era Green Beret who specializes in violent rescues and revenge \u2013 taking a group of mercenaries up the Salween River in search of missing Christian aid workers<\/a> in Myanmar. The character \u201crealizes man is just a few paces away from savagery when pushed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI called Soldier of Fortune magazine and they said Burma was the foremost area of human abuse on the planet,\u201d Stallone said.<\/p>\n

Stallone is now editing \u201cJohn Rambo,\u201d which will be released in January, and said he Is trying to strike a balance and grapple with the question, \u201cAre you making a documentary or a \u2018Rambo\u2019 movie?\u201d<\/p>\n

Shots were fired over the film crew\u2019s heads and there were threats, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were told we could get seriously hurt if we went on,\u201d Stallone said, adding the families of Burmese extras in the movie were imprisoned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was being accused, once again, of using the Third World as a \u2018Rambo\u2019 victim. The Burmese are beautiful people. It\u2019s the military I am portraying as cruel,\u201d he said. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Stallone also remarks that the violence in his film will be pretty intense, but he hopes it gets an R rating anyway because he doesn\u2019t want to \u201cwhitewash\u201d \u201creality\u201d.
